I got a phone call from a friend in the Gulf region today about a strange issue he has. He has been using a product called Creatine Edge. This is an effervescant (spelling) product, like Alka Seltzer, which fizzes (ie gas release) when mixed with water and after being consumed.

As luck would have it, he missed his morning concoction and decided to take it prior to a dive. Apparently this was a bad idea. He usually takes it with plenty of water, as the directions state, as well as following it with another bottle of water if he misses a dose. Murphy's Law definately applied.

Not only did the combintation of the creatine and dry air use u/w cause him to dehydrate faster, but when he started to surface from 80ft, he noticed that his stomach was expanding, which eventually led to his vomiting heavily u/w. He's ok, but he was quite "green" for a few hours according to his wife.

Has anyone heard of anything weird similar to this happening?

but carbonated beverages before diving give me a terrible stomach ache. I haven't chummed the fish from it but my wife has. We swore off the carbonated stuff and now just stick to water.

Bryan.

There were some incidents about 10-15 years ago where bored teens gave alka-seltzer to seagulls. Their stomachs burst, or something to that effect.

Creatine is some sort of metabolic enhancer. I read 3 studies on it and it sounds like snake oil, but one thing is for sure: you're body likes to get rid of it expeditiously. One is recommended to take doses with large quantities of water (drank, not inhaled) and then you pee it out. The dry tank air in combination with not drinking stuff prior to diving probably let this sit in your pals tummy until it figured it would get it out by reversing gears. I tried that stuff when I was younger and working out everyday. Did absolutely nothing for me, but I remember puking once or twice after some workouts. Stopped using right then and there. Nothin' like cleanin' chunks of puke out of your reg.
Safe divin bro
