Is anybody interested in a 2008 Crab Grab in Lower Alabama?

I'll be down Late July, but am open to dates.

Word has it that Mat is trying to abscond with the festivities to Destin. :11: Don't let that happen!!!!

Honestly Paul the last time I was there I saw crabs all over the place. It would be a crab free-for-all. Destin might be the better choice.

*shrugs*

I'm OK for AL, its closer to home, but alot of our beach dives are covered and it might not be too easy to feed everyone :D

I did hear that AL Point Jetties had some nice Stone and Blues on it last weekend though. So who knows, it could still work!

I'm good for wherever, let me know when though... I'm booked 4th of July weekend. All other weekends are open at this time.

I'd say if it happens maybe we should set some traps.
I did find a honey hole for Stone's the other day :)

How about we plan them on two different dates so those of us who want to do both of them can?? The Blue crabs are EVERYWHERE at the Destin jetties....heck, according to Yoda I carried one on my head for a while a few weeks ago!

Since you are traveling down Paul, what is the date in Alabama you want??

Actually, I'll be in on the 26th.

To keep Denise away?

That would need to be a speed trap :D.

The crabs are all over in Destin but many are females with eggs. How long does it take before those crabby children hatch and leave their mother for us to boil?

We'll spread the eggs on a ritz cracker and call it redneck caviar!

<Andy Griffith>Mmmm, good cracker! Good cracker!</Andy Griffith>

Seriously, where do all the males go after inseminating the females? Is there a crab "gentleman's club" where they hang out (looking at softshells)? Are they all sleeping somewhere, in their bachelor's pads?

We should be like Child Welfare Services and go after these deadbeat dads, wherever they are!

This relates to the Chesapeake Blue crab, but I think they should all be the same:

"In other words sooks won't release any eggs until approximately 2-9 months after mating, usually May-August the next season.

The eggs take about two weeks (14 days) to fully develop and hatch. Initially the egg mass is orange-yellow in color and gradually darkens to black. The color change is caused by absorption of the yellow yolk and development of dark pigment in the eyes and on the body of the embryos. Click here to see full color range of egg mass development (numbers correspond to days of development.)

Not for the kiddies:
The primary mating seasons for blue crabs in Louisiana are April through June and September through October. Extended periods of low temperatures will usually significantly shorten the mating season.

The male may mate during its third or fourth intermolt phase after it matures. Females mate only once in their lives immediately following the pubertal, or so-called terminal molt.
