so i guess the answer to my question is painful enough, but not as bad as I thought. I keep getting the image of a guy jumping up and down flapping his arms because the crab wouldn't like go, and crying in great pain
 
Also don't forget if you pick them up form behind they can tuck their walking legs in and dig them into your fingers. It won't harm you badly, but if you aren't ready for it it will make you jump and possibly drop the crab.
 
If you toss the crab in formalin, they don't pinch anymore...
 
I saw a crab on last weekend that was missing part of the top section of the claw. He kept trying to pinch my hand but couldn't grip my glove. Poor little guy, I should have put him in my stockpot and out of his misery.
