I just got back from my 2nd trip to Cozumel. Just curious if this is standard practice for the dive operators in Coz or everywhere.

I had asked the two different dive shops prior to coming down if they rented 2X wet suits, each shop said yes. They both did not have them to rent when I went to get my gear the day I dove. They just DID NOT have ANY 2X to rent.

Is this standard for dive shops to lie just to get you to sign up with them?

I will buy my own suit for my next trip.

Tanks for your inputs.

That's hard to say if it was done to trick you into booking or if it was an honest mistake. Either way, it stinks for you, since you thought everything would be fine.

Glad to see that you will be getting your own suit. It's really for the best, especially if the size you need is not one that they'd have multiples of.

I agree with Kat. I like having my own suit alot, the diuretic effect of salt water theory is enough to make you buy your own suit! I was just in Coz and took my 3mm shorty and it was great.

Perhaps the better question would of been "how many 2X rentals do you have?"

Would not help with a 'dishonest' dive shop, but it is my belief that most are honest.
But they may only have one or two rentals in that size, and so could quickly not have any available. Perhaps seeing if you could 'reserve' one for your diving dates would have also been good idea.

I think it is more a 'communication' problem than a dishonesty problem, but don't know what dive shops you were communicating with, nor the exact details of the communications.

But, if someone called or emailed me at my dive shop (assumming I had one, haven't won the lotto yet) and asked me only do you have rentals of (insert size here) I would see if I had any available for that day, and if I did would say 'yes'.

But having your own suit a good thing anyway, as quality and availablility of rentals can vary considerably from shop to shop and day to day.

Hey, when you're XL and beyond you learn fast- buy your own suit.

You might also see that this is a common "South of the Border" way to handle things. Answers quite often bear no semblance of reality.

They will tell you what you want to hear. They are not really lying, because when you ask them to explain that apparent untruth, their explanation will leave you equally baffled.

In Honduras, when dealing with locals, it is commonly known as the "H Factor".

Go see Gary at Berry/Naperville. Him a big boy too, no doubt.

Here's a great local source http://www.uswetsuits.com/styles.htm

when i was down there last month I rented and im 6'6" and 185lbs. its more of a first come first serve. the first time another guy got it first but the 2nd time i did. there a little small in the torso but it works. to tell you the truth the water there is worm and you really dont need a suit. i get it for protection from jelly fish.. my wife got hit this time while she was snorkeling with my mother who cant dive from heath reasons so we split and wam she got it right in the leg.

No question, buy your own suit. The reasons are many many many from sanitary to exposure protection. I wear one no matter where I am diving and I have yet to get too hot in the water.

I would also recommend getting your own suit, I am definitely not the cookie cutter off the rack type and it was just allot easier to get a custom one made to fit me and not have to rely on dive shops to have one that "sort of " fits.
