@divingjd (and anyone else): Solo Buceo is a dive shop in the zona, but where do the boats leave from? I'm looking at 2 nights in the Adhara Cancun hotel, which looks nice and relatively inexpensive (Priceline.com). But I don't want a long taxi ride to the boats. Or do you taxi to the dive shop and then they cart you to the boats?
Thanks.

When we went last year from Playa we stopped in Cancun to pick up a couple in the Hotel Zone then left from a harbor North of there. Don't know if this is where all the boats leave from but I saw a few.

You might consider staying on Isla Mujeres instead of Cancun. Cool island, great beaches and restaurants. Busy but more of a local feel than Cancun.

That could be really appealing. But we have a 1:30PM flight from CUN; how long would it take to get to the airport from IM? And how expensive would the taxi be from the IM ferry to the airport?

The boat left from the dock at Solo Buceo. I taxied from the Westin to Solo Buceo, which is on the property at the Hyatt Zika, behind a gate that’s locked at that hour of the morning. I told the security guy I was looking for Solo Buceo and he let me in.

Finally, it would be great to get recommendations for lodging in Cancun.

Like the east side beaches of Cozumel, I recall the beaches of Cancun to be pretty rough. I would recommend for you to find a hotel that is on the northern part of Cancun. I have not been to Cancun in 20 years but recall the Krystal Hotel was located on the northern part and beaches were nice and calm. My 2nd recommendation is to go a-la-carte because I hate AI food, especially buffets with no sneeze guards.

Thanks for all the advice, SBers! We're going to bag-drag down to Coz, spend 7 nights in an AirBnB and diving with Tres Pelicanos, reverse bag-drag all the way to the Isla Mujeres Ferry, spend 2 nights on IM (hotel or AirBnB, we don't do all-inclusives) and do a whale shark snorkel, then head to CUN airport in time for a 1:20pm return flight. I'm attaching some useful links for general reference:

Isla Muertes Ferry (from either Gran Puerto or Puerto Juarez):

Finally, I'll repeat the info for "Chief's" highly recommended car service; I'm hoping to use them for all 3 legs:

I'll give a trip report after we return (in July!). It's been somewhat therapeutic to be planning this trip while watching the snow and sleet build up outside.
