I will have my 2 teenage kids without their mom for spring break in mid March. Being that the wife doesn't like to rough it and I don't mind, I thought that a Blackbeards trip with their Nassau departure might fit the bill. I have been on 2 previous Blackbeard trips, so I know their operation well (though not out of Nassau). I am also considering cozumel for that week. My question is predominantly weather related. I've been blown out a number of times in South Florida at spring break due to the heavy winds. The Bahamas are basically just about 80 miles east - so I imagine are susceptible to the same winds. I don't know how well they are able to address this by diving in the lee of islands when the wind kicks up. I'm also not so sure about Cozumel. Which venue is more apt to have good dive conditions at that time?

I have not done a Blackbeards trip but my wife did one in in the month of June and said the crossing was rough. I am not sure what that says about March. We have both been to the Bahamas in January and had a cold front the entire week (64 F air and sea temp with strong sustained winds). So basically whatever weather southern Florida had, Nassau had. I would think March would be better but Florida does get cold weather in March.

We have been to Cozumel many times roughly that time of year (a little earlier and a little later) and have had generally good weather though we have had rain. Nortes can occur in March but less so than in January.

If I had to choose one based on the time of year and general/average weather and it was the deciding factor, I would choose Cozumel but I have no crystal ball for specific weather for a given week just averages.

The diving we found is different between the two so if that matters, pick one that suits you and your sons tastes and hope for good weather. I think as you know, the liveaboard is going to go to sites that many land based operations are not. Cozumel is going to be land based. Generally these will be leeward unless the wind changes.
