I am coming down this summer and want to concentrate my diving on finding and shooting GREAT macro photos. What are the best dive sites for this? Who is the best "critter finding" dive guide ?

If you Dive with Blue Angel, tell Jose you like macro. I think that is his favorite. He consistently looks for and finds juvenile everything, plus pipe horses, etc. and marks the site in the sand with a couple of small pieces of something he finds so that the next time he is there he knows where to look, all while respectful to the life. Amazing.

Colombia Shallows. It's a 30' max dive with coral heads reaching within 6' of the surface. Usually there is little to no current there. I always spend a lot of the dive hanging near the coral with my magnifying glass looking at tiny stuff.

It's especially great as a second morning dive on a sunny day with the sun more or less directly overhead.

Thumbs up for Jose at Blue Angel - also their shoredive out front is awesome for small stuff ... Flamingo Tongues, Blennies, Painted Elysia, plenty of juves, etc.

I am not diving with Blue Angel. Will they allow me to do a shore dive in front of their shop? Painted Elysia is on top of my list. I have been diving in Cozumel for 18 years and have yet to spot one.....

Sure. Just go to the dive shop between 7:30AM and 5PM and rent tanks and weights and jump in.

Jose is probably the smallest dive pro on the island.....with the biggest eyes. Finds all kinds of macro critters for photographers. He will even bring out his giant magnify glass to show you.

It truly is an awesome dive in BAs "front yard" .... I am a beginning photographer - these are all from out front in 20'.

Coz is one big macro opportunity. From the wall dives to the shallows, there are lots of critters to shoot.
