My girlfriend and I have been thinking about going to Cozumel in July and staying at the Fiesta Americana. The dates we are looking at are the 13th-17th. On expedia it’s about $735 for the four night stay. It is however, only about $30 more to stay an extra day.

My questions are:
Should we stay an extra night being that we are broke college students on a budget or just say forget about the money and enjoy the extra day/night?

Also, how is Cozumel in July? Is it going to be overly hot? Living in Oklahoma, we are pretty used to heat and humidity as it is. Last year, we went in March and it was still a bit cool at night.

How is Fiesta Americana? We stayed at Hotel Cozumel and enjoyed it a lot, but it’s out of our budget this time. I also heard that FA has all ocean view rooms except for the ones out back which we wouldn’t book. Is the hotel nice and clean? Is the food good?

Lastly, who should we book for diving? Anyone use their dive shop or would it be easier to go through Christi?

Sorry about all the questions! Just wanting to try out a new hotel and wanted to get everyone’s opinions!

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Eric

Cozumel in July can be pretty hot, especially right before a rainstorm. Not as hot as Texas, though.

$30 for an extra night? Are you kidding? How many of those can you get? I've NEVER been there, thinking "Damn. If I'd not wasted that $30 I could be home by now." I have, OTOH, paid a lot more than $30 once I was down there just to stay one more day.

I'm gonna agree with Gordon, $30 is a bargain!

Any dive op you choose will be a piece of cake there... FA is South of the calleta so ALL dive ops will pick you up there.

I personally use Christi everytime I go there so you can see who I would vote for. But... if you are that broke you may save a few bucks using the onsite op. You will not get the kind of personalized service that Christi can offer though :14:

$30 for extra night TAKE IT AND SMILE!!!!!

Go with Christi if she is booked try www.bottomtimedivers.net or www.liquidbluedivers.com you will be glad you did. They all will pick you up at the hotel pier.
The hotel was damaged by wilma but will be fully operational by 4-1-06 so your ok there. Nice pool and deck and has a beach. Never ate there but heard food was ok.
If your on a budget and prefer smaller hotel on the water try Caribe Blu or right in town on the water is Barracuda. www.travelnotes.cc seem to have the best prices for those. Barracuda is walking distance to town and should also have the pool done by then. Caribe blu is $5 taxi to town. Both seem to have mostly divers staying there.

You also have to take into account how much money you will be spending on airfare. That makes the $30 for an extra night even that much more of a great deal. I'd call you uncomplimentary names if you didn't go for it.

Thanks for the advice guys. We are going to book sometime tomorrow and get it over with. I would hate to miss out on that deal when I get back from Orlando next week.

From all the great things I've heard about Christi's operation, I think we will go ahead and book through her. I don't think anyone is booking this far in advance..... I think.

Yea, $30 for an extra night is wondeful. I think if anything, I would just sit by the water and not do a SINGLE thing. Well... maybe squeeze in some snorkeling. Sunbathing is free.... :)

Well, we booked it for those dates. The only thing I'm worried about is the fact we get there at 11:30am and leave at 3pm. I'll have to email the hotel and see about a early check in and late check out.

Perhaps some other SBer's will be down there around that time as well!

We always get in early last July we arrived at 10:00am at the hotel...just pack a swim suit and change in one of the hotel bathrooms and go sit by the pool the hotel will lock up your luggage until they have your room ready....or just have them lock up your luggage and grab a cab and go to town. Sometimes when we arrive early they have our rooms ready....don't worry it will work out.

On ck out go ahead and go to the airport and ck your luggage in and then grab a cab back to town and have lunch....you will have to walk across the street from the airport to get a cab since they cannot pickup only drop off at the airport.

Don't sweat the small stuff. Start getting in a Coz frame of mind of mind. Start expecting things to be about 15 minutes behind said times. Just relax and go with the flow. Promise yourself that next trip you will give yourself more time and eat at all the fine restaurants in town.

We stayed at Fiesta American last April. The location was great for diving since it's quite a ways south and close to the dive sites. It was a bit too far from town at a $6 taxi. There was a bus to/from town that had started running in the summer, but I haven't heard whether or not it is back in service.

Did you take the AI option? It's worth it for breakfast, and lunch and the unlimted litre bottles of water. The pool area is about half the size of Hotel Cozumel and it was tough to get a chair in the afternoon.
