Debating about heading down next spring for the first time, and was hoping for an inexpensive place such as the Fiesta or hotel Coz that I've been reading about that isn't AI. Would like to be close to town so that we can try out the restaurants being that it would be the first time either of us get to mexico, I'd hate to hole up a resort the entire time.

Anyway, my concerns are that it sounds like these two hotels can be quite the partying places. Any tips on spots that aren't AI, are affordable like these two hotels, quiet, near town, and have a decent beach? A lot to ask, but the selection is completely overwhelming in Cozumel.

Just got back from FiestaAmericana. Had a great time. AI is the way to go. The amount of bottled water alone pays for itself. Yes, you'll drink alot. Fiesta is about 8 minutes out of town. Right on the water. The boats are with Dive House although they have a large pier that others shops can pick you up from. Dive House has great boats. Large. The staff at the hotel are real nice.

Because Fiesta is out of town you won't get all the crowds. Also they are closer to the reefs.

Good Luck.

No hotel close to town is going to have a "decent beach" except maybe one or two north of town, and those are not very conducive to diving. Check out Caribe Blu, though, for a quiet, diver friendly, non-AI spot close to town.

There you go again giving away your secret place....which is not too secret anymore;)

I agree with Gordon....Caribe Blu is a great divers hotel and quiet as well...some rooms have fridges so you can stock up on drinks etc...

We stay at Hotel Cozumel....I don't really consider it a party place but the loud music by the pool can get old after awhile :shakehead but...we usually go AI mainly so we can eat breakfast and lunch w/o getting out of our swimsuits and of course the all you can drink water/sodas/alcohol is a definite plus...it is cheap enough to still go to town at night and eat at all the wonderful restuarants

You may want to look into the Melia, it's AI but not mandatory. There is a great beach and it has a nice property. The taxi ride into town is $5.

I stayed at Fiesta Americana and Hotel Cozumel, one time each and that was enough. The hotels themselves were fine but the loud pool music and animation staff with the bingo, volleyball, contests, etc., just wasn't for me. I think Hotel Coz is overpriced. You are paying for being walking distance to town and having a big pool. At FA you would be best to take the AI even if it's just for breakfast, lunch and the bottled water. You'd end up spending as much or more if you have to pay as you go.

I liked Casa del Mar and found it to be a nice compromise between a full resort and bare bones hotel. The superior rooms and nice. Cabanas are a two-story suite with an efficiency kitchenette. The staff at that hotel was great and the restaurant was fine for breakfast and a few lunches. I did have a couple dinners on night-dive days and they were also good. Unlike the larger resort hotels, there was never a problem getting a chair on the pool deck in the afternoon if you just wanted to hang out there for awhile. And no pool games and bingo!

I've also found Villablanca to be a great value. It's basic, comfortable and has a pretty convenient location. We've had good rooms there (Superior Oceanview booked through Expedia) but I have read reports that were so different from my experience that I wasn't sure they were staying at the same hotel.
