Hi Everyone, we are sort of limited to the choice of accommodation as the flights are only really cheap if we take a package, so my question is has anyone stayed at any of these (feedback needed) and if so what dive OP?

Allegro Cozumel
Occidental Grand Cozumel
Park Royal Cozumel
Iberostar Cozumel
Melia Cozumel
El Cozumeleno
Playa Azul

We are looking for an all inclusive that has a mixed program I am a dive nut, my son likes video games (he is 12) and my wife likes the beach. We all like good food and they are doing some PADI courses.

You might want to narrow down your search a little bit by cruising thru some of the stuff already on this forum.

Generally, only the south end resorts (quite far from town) have beaches. And there's a pile of great dive ops to choose from.

I will answer you on Playa Azul. It is a beautiful hotel (about 50 rooms) on the north side of the island. They have a dive shop right next door (used to be ProDive but someone posted a while back that they have changed). I've toured it twice and it is very nice but I have never stayed there.

They do offer a AI package. They have a Pier for pickup and a sandy beach (I'm sure it is man-made). It is right across the street from the golf course. The north side is very quite with some beautiful homes and condo's nearby. The north side (IMHO) is like a different island, quiet and hardly any traffic but still close to town.

The problem with Playa Azul for diving is that it "IS" on the north side so any diving you would do would take you on a very long boat ride to get to the southern (and most popular) dive sites. Same for the return trip. I would imagine it would add at least 30 minutes or more each way to your trip which can sometimes be an hour or longer not counting the north side extra time. I'm not sure there is any shore diving there but the sand runs out for snorkeling.

Aldora has their hotel/rentals (not sure if they call it a hotel) but they leave from the downtown pier. I'm not sure if Aldora picks them up or they take the taxi.

Anyway.. even though Playa Azul is a beautiful place I think you would be much better staying south. If you want to visit town without a long taxi ride then Scuba Club, Hotel Cozumel or Blue Angel are within walking distance. Anything further would involve a taxi ride which from the southern most AI resorts can be $20 to $25.00 each way for the taxi (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Others will have to give you the scoop on the hotels further south than Blue Angel, I'm not familiar with them, especially if you are looking for shore diving and/or a beach.

Good Luck !!

The beaches are better to the south of the island, if that is a consideration. And the boat rides are a lot shorter to the dive sites...At Allegro, the boats typically return to the hotel during surface intervals (only for a few minutes) and then between the morning and afternoon dives. Pro Dive, at Allegro, is a very friendly, nice op, in my experience. The hotel itself is nothing really to write home about--it's hey day was probably 20 years ago, but we spent some time there during the holidays, and it seemed like there was a fair amount of money being put back into capital items, so they were sprucing the place up. However, it is not the Riviera Maya, so don't expect a lot of granite, marble, etc. It is finished rather modestly. And the food at AIs is mostly buffet, so if that is OK, you'll be fine. When we were there, we did fine with the food...but it can get a bit monotonous, in terms of selection, and overall taste...
The other thing is that like many properties in Mexico, the soundproofing is not like many of us are used to--you can hear things from other rooms if folks make noise--and if you are on a top floor, you have a palapas roof, which definitely doesn't dampen a lot of sounds (birds, etc., early in the morning). Of course, as a diver, I was always up early anyway, so it didn't matter....we were the people trying not to wake up others.

I know that doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement, but it is also not as sketchy as this might read. I love the staff at the hotel--they were very accommodating, and work their butts off. They do the best they can to make sure your stay is great. And I really do like Pro Dive. The staff there were the same way---wanting to make sure your dives were good. I would have no hesitation at all having a family member train with them.

The beach at Allegro is one of the better ones on the west side of the island. So overall, it is a good option, particularly since you are looking at a package deal. We have found overall that while we can do AIs, our preference, when feasible, affordable, etc., is to stay closer to town--not in an AI, and to dive from small, fast boats. But I would go back to Allegro if I had some of the same considerations of cost, package, etc., and would not have concerns about it at all. The point for me is to be able to be on Cozumel. After that (with some floor for comfort, diving/safety, amenities, etc.) it is all gravy.

One thing I will say is that if internet is necessary, it is extra, and expensive--$20 per day, or some discount (but still expensive) for a week. I think your son would have fun there--they do a lot of activities--he may even forget the video games for a while.

All of that is a long way of saying, "it depends on what you are looking for." I'm not sure that is helpful, but at least it gives some flavor...

There are photo tours of several of those here & some have link to tripreport / reviews.

I'm here right now & use Westjet which flies us to / from Toronto for a token fee as part of the flights from Ottawa to Cozumel & for this & the last 2 trips there are no layovers or long waits at airports. Air Canada has a similar deal but lately there's an overnight layover in 1 direction. For most other options you usually need to get to Toronto or Montreal (Sunwing, Air Transat, Signature etc). We book our hotel separate from our airfare these days because it works better than a package based on a Toronto charter flight.

when are you planning on going? I booked a trip to Cozumel with my kids and are staying at Allegro. Will most likely dive with Dive with Martin as I heard a lot of good things about them. Also their gear rental is included in their dive package. We will be bringing our own bcd but I don't have reg for the kids so that is a cost saving and have heard of lots of good thing about them.

Will be flying AC connect thru Montreal going, but for coming back, I will fly Maya to Cancun then AC to Toronto then back to Ottawa as I don't want the overnight stay.

We stayed at the Occidental Grand 4 times last year. We are planning our next trip in June & Sep to the OG. If you decide on a south resort which is AI, give the OG some thought. Here is our last years trip reports filled with resort pictures and diving pictures. One major thing I love about the Dive Palancar (on-site dive shop) is they dive 4 times a day. Two deep dives and two shallow dives per day. 9, 11, 1 & 3. If you want, you can PM me and I'll turn you on to a site for your reservations to the OG which are cheaper then their website reservation site.

When we stay in a resort, we always stay at El Cozumeleno. Super nice people and probably the best staff on the Island. I highly recommend them.

Occ Grand is the only resort that has a stretch of beach without iron shore. That's a huge factor. It's one thing to have a nice beach, but if you can't really enjoy the water from the beach, what's the point? Big deal for me anyway. And for our young daughter.
