Hi!

My name is Andreas and Im from Sweden. Me and my girlfriend, Emelie, are coming to cozumel the 10th of january 2005 and we are going to stay there for 6 months. Now to the main reason I posted this thread.

We are currently looking for an apartmant. Nothing fancy or big, but nice and clean for 2 people. I was just wondering if any of you guys know of any apartments that are out for rent. Im looking in the price range of 300 - 500 $ /months.

I have never before been on Cozumel, but I have maps of San Miguel so if you know of any apartment you can describe to me where it's located.

I'll see you on Cozumel guys! I am so really looking forward to this! Its going to be a great adventure!

Best Regards
Andreas

Andreas,

Here is another forum that may be very helpful to you.

www.cozumelmycozumel.com and go to the Local Talk forum. You can get alot of good advice there from people who own homes or live on the island full-time.

Make sure that when you go through customs at your first point of entry, you request a 180 day stay. Otherwise, they will give you a 30 day max and you will have to pay an extension fee at the end of the 30 days to stay in the country. If you only get a 30 day entry, and ignore the extension request/fee, you will be slapped with a large fine before you can leave Mexico. It will compound over the 6 months.

You should be able to find a nice apartment (furnished) in that price range (furnished will be closer to $500 per month), but may be required to pay your entire lease up front since you have no credentials or payment history on the island.

There are new apartments going up all around central San Miguel, but most are individually owned. Arranging an apartment before you get here is going to be very difficult. My suggestion is to stay in a hotel for a few days when you arrive, and walk around and see what areas you like. You can find an apartment within a few days and there are some very economical hotels in central San Miguel as well.

Good luck! By the way, what are you planning to do here for 6 months?

Thanks for the information about costums! I will do as you said when we arrive. Can I work on cozumel if I have 180 days permission to stay in Mexico? Work legal i mean? And when I ask for 180 days, will they charge me for that or anything?

Im going to Cozumel on a scholarship provided by the swedish government. Im going to work at a dive shop. See ya there!

And thanks all you others that gave me a tip on how to find an apartment!

Saludos!

You cannot work in Mexico as a tourist. The Dive shop has to arrange for your work papers. Make sure you are leagal to work here before you start.....

Don already answered your question correctly, but I just want to reitterate that NO, you cannot work legally here without proper papers, which will take time to get. You must be sponsored by a local business specifically in the job that you will be performing. this job must be a job that a Mexican National is not qualified to do. There are certian positions that foreigners simply cannot obtain work permits for. Divemasters have never been on this "approved" work permi list and foreign instructors are no longer issued work permits.

Furthermore, the requirements for obtaining an FM3 have gotten much more difficult (it's never been easy). They are trying to prevent people from coming down for a few months of "vacation" working a little without really contributing to the community and then leaving. This practice is highly frowned upon here. If you are caught woking illegally, the dive shop will be heavily fined and you will be deported.

Perhaps you have some special arrangements worked out with your scholarship. If not, I would think long and hard about what you are going to do.

Yes I have special arrangements that comes along with the scholarship. So that is not a problem, Im thinking of my girlfriend and how she can get a work down there. And ofcourse, we are not there to make any trouble for ourself so we will absolutely work legally, we have no other intentions. Thanks for explaining to me what needs to be done. I will call the mexican embassy here in Sweden and ask for the necassary papers to be able to work legally. How long will it take for them to make a decision?

Hi Andreas. Getting n touch with the embassy there is a great idea. They can tell you exactly what needs to be done. However, unless your girlfriend is planning to incorporate herself and start a corporation (which has a whole other set of prerequisites and Takes about 6 months )...she will have to be sponsored by a Mexican corporation. A company must have 10 Mexican nationals to every foreigner to be able to sponsor anyone. Her best option will probably be to check with the jewelry stores as they seem to be able to have alot of connections.

Good luck and enjoy your stay in Cozumel.

So what you are saying is that if my girlfriend can find a job there it works 10 or more mexicans and no other foreigner, she can maybe get a work there?

Seems very hard to get a legit work down in Mexico. Its to bad, I think that if there wasnt so hard to get a legally work, people wouldnt work ilegal. Do you have a lot off not legal workers on cozumel?

Have a great day everybody!
