And the Grand benefits from shorter boat rides. Depends on what's more important. Personally, I can get a lot of good gourmet food where I live so while on vacation, I prefer shorter boat trips. YMMV.
No, not always shorter boat rides. If you want to dive any of the northern sites, then the boat ride will be longer. That is if the dive op is willing to haul you up to San Juan and then back to the Grand.

My usual mantra: decide what kind of diving you want to do, and you'll find a few excellent dive operations to cater to that, especially in Cozumel. Most people wouldn't know a good dive operation if it swam up and hit them in the face, and really beware of people saying this one or that one is the best or worst, since unless they dove (dived? have diven?) with every dive operation in a particular location in every type of condition and under every circumstance, the person really has no frame of reference to compare. Usually, the person went on their first dive trip and drank a lot of tequilla the last night and so that means that dive operation is the best (or worst)...in other words, believe half of what you see and none of what you hear...

Dive with Troy from Pelagic Ventures. He is a canadian that has a relaxing charter system will take you where people are qualified and fishing in between the dives for the surface interval. What a relaxing day and starting at 9 30 AM you can sleep in or have a relaxing breakfast.

Hotel Coz is great, but I've heard good things about other resorts as well. We used the hotel dive op for a shore dive on a bad weather day and have no complaints with them, though I did hear others say they did not like the crowded boats.

The other dive op we used picked us up at the pier every morning and returned us to the pier at the end of our dives. The only time we went to their dive shop was for the night dive.

For the hotel: I found no fault with the quality of the food. For the price, I found the accomodations clean, the food if not gourmet definitely edible and the staff exceedingly friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay there again.
