ps> is it worth doing a day trip to cancun since we've never been? is there a lot to do there??

gracias y addios,

As someone said, Cancun reminds me of Miami - one giant hotel after another. Nice beaches, but nothing else - once was enough for me.

On the other hand, Tulum has got to be one of the most amazing places around - definitely worth the side trip. If you do not rent a car, you always have the option of doing a tour to Tulum - costs about $60 per person, runs a couple of days a week (I think Tuesday and Saturday), and includes all transportation from the Ferry Terminal in Cozumel to Tulum and back again (includes entrance fee to Tulum). So if you want to leave the driving to someone else, this is a good way to go. Leave from the dock in Coz at 8 AM and back by 2 PM, still time for shore dive in front of El Presidente (I saw lot's of great critters) or just lounging on the beach.

If you are thinking about renting a car on the mainland to drive somewhere like Talum... I would suggest that you mix something else into a road trip like a cavern dive or snorkel in the Cenotes. There is a place very close to Talum (it's just before you get to Talum on the right side of the highway) called Hidden Worlds where you can snorkel or dive. we did one of the snorkeling tours and it was tons of fun. The drive to the cave is something you will never forget (they have the most bizarre stripped down trucks I have ever seen. The web site for hidden worlds is http://www.hiddenworlds.com.mx/ There may be a better place to go but that is the only one I know.
Have fun

Or else you could see Coba as well as Tulum. Coba is another set of ruins which is 20 miles or so inland from Tulum and very different. Among other things, it features the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan.

If you are going to the mainland and want to still dive, the cenotes are the best option.

since we are not cave-certified, is that a problem? is that a must?

would snorkeling suffice??

thanks,
