I drove to New Orleans to pick up my buddy Skye then drove to Dallas to catch a plane to Costa Rica. Once in CR I couldnt find my rental car information so we had two choices the bus or taxi. I remember last year when all I had was a backpack. Now between Myself, Skye and all our dive gear it looked like we where moving to CR not just visiting, two large rolling bags, one large rolling duffle, and two backpacks and that was just Skyes stuff (only kidding ) anyway this was way to much stuff for an already crowded bus so we took a taxi to Tamarindo 60 bucks for a 60 mile ride. The taxi ride was something out of an Action Movie !!!. (Skyes first taxi ride, completed with her eyes mostly closed and I'm still wearing the marks from it.) Arrived at the hotel where we were greeted warmly by the staff because I had met them last year and made some good friends there. The porters took the bags to the room and we followed, once there I made a few phone calls to the car rental place and a friend in CR and of course the Dive Op. We made plans to dive the next morning at 7am, but decided to test the tropical waters sooner, so we put our swimsuits on and made our first dive that afternoon in the pool at the hotel. I've actually had bigger bandages then the bikini Skye was wearing . The next morning I got up early and went down to get some of that CR coffee that I love soooo much. I came back later and woke Skye up, we got ready to do our first dives Yippy. The dive op picked us up at the hotel and there were already 5 divers in the van. We where told that 4 of the divers where newbies and they where going out on a boat with their instructor. Skye, another blonde lady from Argentina and I where going out on a boat by ourselves with the captain and crew of course. (Yep, my luck still running true, had two blonde cuties to entertain.) We headed out for the Catalina Islands and our first dive was on Elephant Rock. The vis was not that great because a storm surge had stirred up the waters pretty good from the week before and they where having a bit of Red Tide in the area our first dive was 86 ft deep with plenty to see also Fish Fish Fish everywhere!. Dive 2 was at Cupcake Island and the depth was 60 ft again big schools of fish everywhere. The next day we decided not to dive and let the vis clear-up a little so we secured our rental car and drove around the country a little to see all the great things that CR has to offer. Our next dive was out at the Catalina's again, this time it was (blank rock? 65 ft) and there we saw our first shark of the trip it was a little nurse shark Yippy. 2nd dive was at Dirty Rock 60 ft and there the vis was great!!! lobsters, fish, sea creature's galore!!!. Took the next day to travel across the continent., Yes across, two oceans in one day (Reminder don't let Skye try to read the map!). there's a volcano and hot springs and clear rivers that you can go rafting on. We stayed away from the big resturants and chose to eat at local places the food was great and inexpensive. Our next dive was at Dirty Rock again where just a few days before had a great dive and good vis. I had been taking pic's the whole time on every dive if it was a good shot or not. alot of the time I just stuck my camera into a opening in the rocks and started snapping away. The flash from the camera brought out the curious fish. we dove, drove and dined. What a Blast we had. ( this is just the tip of the iceburg on all we got ourselves into.

hey, sounds like you had a lot of fun there.
Pura Vida! indeed a lovely country.

i was in Costa Rica over the last christmas and had a ball myself.
dove Catalina, elephant rock, dirty rock and the one that you called cupcake...well, i don't know if you were told, but our guide had a different name for it. ;-)

btw, i don't know if you got to see it, but there was a sea horse off the Catalina island. the abundance of marine lives was just amazing. i would definitely go back!

I just got back from CR this morning and its an amazing place. Didnt do any diving because our car broke down! Did some snorkling right off our hotel beach and saw octopus, eels, stingrays, angelfish, corals, rays, pufferfish, snappers , groupers and countless other amazing creatures. The red tide screwed up our fishing but thats ok because you never run out of stuff to do in CR. Saw the poas volcano and la paz waterfall gardens, all of which were amazing. I agree about the food. Good and cheap. Had a tuna dinner that was only 6 dollars but would have been at least 25 in the states. It was just an amazing place.

Cant wait to go back!

GotAir,
actually the term that our guide used had a couple of T's in it. ;)

i dove with AquaCenter Diving at Playa Flamingo, which is where i stayed. very nice folks. extra helpful in not only making diving arrangement, but also with a lot of other local info.

btw, we saw dolphins and a whale, albeit while on the boat. everyone, including our guides, were very excited to have spotted the whale, as apparently a whale siting is not common at all in this area.

peace and blue skies!

indeed, the food was good and cheap. we had feast on every meal.

speaking of car, we had a clunker for a rental car, which we drove around quite a bit through all those pot holes. you know what they say about driving in Costa Rica: it's an adventure all in itself!

well it wasnt the car's fault, my brother just drove really fast through a river, flooding the engine at 12am. We had to walk for 2 hours until some drunk americans coming from a ***** house in tamarindo picked us up. Thank god for Why Not! Indeed, it is an adventure!
