Ok, I'm moving to Thailand this year, probably before September if all goes as planned.

I've been to Phuket for an extended stay and have a fairly decent grasp of how much things cost.

What I don't know is what things cost in BKK (assuming more expensive than Phuket though).

I'm also considering living someplace between BKK and Phuket so that I can drive to Phuket occasionally but still be close enough to the gulf to dive there at will.

So, my main concerns are finding out information on costs of rentals and what towns to look at. I don't care about bars or nightlife.

Suggestions?

Hmm. Actually Phuket is comparatively expensive. Its a major tourist destination, and that tends to hike up the price of stuff. To be honest, I tend to think that Bangkok is cheaper, although I suppose to some extent it really depends upon the specifics of what you are talking about.

Fair old drive between Phuket and Bangkok - 12 to 14 hours if I recall correctly. For mid way, Chumporn may be an idea- think thats about half way, or Surat Thani, which is nearer to Phuket. Chumporn is a head off point to Koh Tao and Samui, so you get that side, as well as I beleive some diving straight out of chumporn (although think its small scale yet). Gonna be *much* cheaper than Phuket (or bangkok).

nice map here:

Chumporn would be comparatively quiet, and western amenities not that available though.

let me know if you need more specifics, although as a bangkok lad, not *that* up on info on "down country"....haha
