Heading to Utila over the Holidays. Our rental is near the Coral View Dive Shop. I am wondering if anyone has experience using them
Thanks

I dove with Coral View for 2 weeks this summer. It was for sure different than the regular season because I was diving with an academic travel group called Operation Wallacea, and we had schlep all our own gear (read: tanks!) and I was doing reef check, not fun diving. The boats and captains are great as are the staff. I am sure they will make sure you have a good experience. If you end up diving with them, say " Hi" to Rich from me! :) Also, the home reef is really nice, as are some really close by spots, like Black Coral Wall (which by the way is awesome on night dives). Have fun!

Carey (from Toronto)

PS, do you also have access to a vehicle? CV is a bit out of the way, and it is a nice but a little long walk into town. TukTuks at night charge a bit more, or bring a flashlight for the walk back. While you are in town, definitely head to La Cuerva for some fruit flavored rum shots! :)

Thanks for the information Carey. I will check with them about the schleping expectations. We are renting a house "2 minutes" from CV. We will have a golf cart for at least part of our stay there. What is TukTuks?

Hi Vicki,

The TukTuks are these three wheeled vehicles which are the cabs there. There is a little bench in the back which comfortably seats two, but I have been in one where it was four of us, and then the cabbies wife. Crazy! I would still definitely bring a flashlight, as there are no lights on the road between the public beach and the area around CV (and lots of puddles). As far as restaurants, there are a couple near the public beach, and the first one on the road in town is the Driftwood, which is decent, but a bit more pricey than most places, although still cheap by most standards. One of my favourite places in town is a little place called Babalu's, good food and funky atmosphere, Mermaids is also pretty good for something cheap, and they have a really yummy conch soup. I will be going back to Utila for my dive master training sometime next spring, but I wish I was going sooner, I miss it!

(By the way, if you click on the link to my flickr account in my signature, the first page is all pics from Utila.)

Thanks Carey,
I will take your information with me. Your pictures are great. They make me want to leave right now.
Vicki in snowless (so far) MN

Thanks so much Vicki. I am sure you will have a wonderful time there. Please send my best regards to Rich and Sarah, and say hi to Miss Taunia (from CV hotel) for me if you run into her. :)

Carey (from Toronto) also snowless so far...
