We are planning a trip to the Coral Sea/lizard island area in June and are wondering what the typical temp of the water will be at that time. We don't want to lug more than one wetsuit but will take hooded vests for some flexability.

Although I have not been to the Coral see, our dive shop is planning a trip in 2011 and I have asked the same question. The responses I have received say that the water temp is around 75 degrees F. The above water temps will be in the mid 70's. I plan on taking a full 3 mil suit with a hooded vest.

Bill

I HAVE BEEN UP THE RIBBONS AND ANCHORED IN WATSONS BAY LIZARD ISLAND THE LAST 2 AUGUSTS , STOPED ABOUT 3 WEEKS EACH TIME. ALWAYS WEAR A 3MM SIUT WITHOUT A HOOD AND THIN SOCKS UNDER MY PULL OVER FINS. OFTEN ALSO A THIN VEST.
CAN'T QUITE REMEBER THE WATER TEMP, PROBABLY ABOUT 24C I WOULD GUESS. vERY WINDY IN THE WINTER AND EARLY SPRING. EXPECT 20 - 30 KNOTS MOST DAYS. BUT VERY PROTECTED IN THE BAY FROM THOSE TOTALY PREDICTABLE NASTY S.E. TRADES. WE WORK OUR WAY UP THE RIBBONS ON OUR OWN BOAT DURING A QUIET PERIOD GETTING IN A FEW DIVES , ANCHOR IN THE BAY ..MAYBE SHOOT OUT TO THE COD HOLE AND AROUND THAT AREA WHEN THERE IS A WEATHER LULL( WINDS DROP TO 15 - 20KNOTS) .WHEN WE'VE HAD ENOUGH AND GET A GOOD WEATHER PATTERN WE GO BACK DOWN THE RIBBONS TO PORT DOUGLAS. DIVING AT ALOT OF THE REEFS THAT I REALLY LIKE. APART FROM THE WIND I LOVE LIZARD IS. ..GREAT SPOT TO HANG LOOSE WITH PLENTY OF THINGS TO DO... NOT MANY BOATS IN THE BAY UNTILL EARLY SEPTEMBER WHEN WINDS START SLOWING AND THE MARLIN FISHERMAN START ROLLING IN FOR THE OCTOBER COMP. IF YOU WANT ANY DETAILED INFO LET ME KNOW.
A GOOD SCOURCE OF INFO IS THE MARINE RESEARCH STATION ON LIZARD, THEY ARE REALLY NICE AND HELPFULL AND ALSO HAVE TALKS ETC ONCE A WEEK FOR VISITING BOATIES ETC.

I wonder if there is a month where the winds are calm, little rain, and the viz is really good at Ribbon Reef and Cod Hole?

Bill

There are no doldrums in this part of the world but it gets less windy in october , november is usually good ( 2008 was only 10-15knots about 20 days of nov) , first 3 weeks in december is also usually v. good. The live on board boats are big ocean going vessells much bigger and more stable than my own craft. So if you are on them the winds won't bother you to much any time of the year as you will anchor & dive mostly inside the reef and conditions will be ok. Having said that if i was coming from over seas and had a choice of times i would choose november or december when the tradeS give way to a lot of light NORTH EASTERLIES. Vis is always pretty good but less wind means better vis in oct, nov, dec.

I know you asked for June but i dived the Coral Coast a week ago and it was 27c.
