And what country would the Cooper River be in? I know Cooper Creek in Australia which is really a river, but I doubt anyone would dive in it! Perhaps also say where in that country it might be. You realise that people from all over the world use Scubaboard?

And what country would the Cooper River be in?
Near & about Charleston South Carolina USA. Back in pre-historic times of very high waters, megladon sharks would traverse the Cooper River and deposit their 12cm to 4cm (~5 inch) long huge teeth in the tidal river. It is a well known fossil dive but extremely challenging condition with ripping currents and dark tanic water reducing visibility so that in some cases you can't even read your air supply.

There is a Cooper River in South Carolina , US. I don’t know if it is the one OP is talking about. It is a limited viz diving due to “black water” . I was told
It is due to tannins from cypress trees. Many rivers in SC harbor ancient shark teeth, so some divers do that in limited viz in the current.

I typed my post at the same time as @Johnoly but he beat me to it . It says the same thing, so it must be true. :)

Sorry for the vague location details. Yes, was referring to the Cooper River in the US. Still not found apparently. There’s another news link here without much details ( https://www.counton2.com/news/emerg...xaftQ5dMY-npYoXaGk_aem_cvpJWKoBLhdM8uXX79iMnQ ), but I was also updated with this:

“While an official investigation is underway all that is currently known is this AOW diver was doing his second in Cooper River. He successfully surfaced, deploying his yellow surface marker buoy from his finger spool. While boarding other divers onboard a shout of help was heard and the boat proceed to give assistance. When responding to the location and arriving to the location, marked by the SMB, the diver was not spotted on the surface. While speculation on what could have happened, nothing definite will be known until the investigation. In the meantime everyone please keep his family in Prayer.”

Not to speculate, but for those unfamiliar with the dangerous conditions of the cooper, alligators are also a concern. I myself came up from a dive and was on the surface waiting for the boat to come pick me up, which wouldn’t start apparently, and had a very large gator swimming directly towards me, when the boat finally was able to grab me. Not by any means saying that was the case in this instance, but I certainly can’t help but think of it.
