We are planning on taking a trip to Cozumel in oct this year. On delta you are only allowed 62 linear inches for a bag. My question is how do you take all your equipment without extra charges. I know an extra bag fee will be imposed but I don't want an oversized or overweighted fee. I have an Ogio 9800 gear bag that fits my wife's and I gear. Just looking for other options for both of us in one box. Thx

you can leave the dive bag for two sets of gear at home....you will each need to get your own bag...I can pack all my gear in one 30" roller gear bag....I am not a photog so all I have is dive gear...I fly Continental to Cozumel they only allow 1 50lb free bag per person for coach ...that is subject to change I am sure ;)...I pack all my clothes I need for a week in a carryon....

My husband and I each have our own dive bags checked. Then we have a clothing bag (small duffle style) checked.
We have two carryons - one with regulators, dive logs, our masks, and swimsuits. One with camera gear.
We have 2 personal bags - one with laptop, cords, etc. Other with misc stuff.

Yes, we pay the additional baggage fee, just the cost of diving. :D

One good tip - buy one of those hand held scales to weigh your bags on way back so you don't have to worry about excess lb fees. It goes in front pocket of a carryon. It saved us big time returning from Hawaii a few years ago. Wet gear weighs more, even if it feels dry to touch!

OK, tricky one!

Firstly, check with the dive operator what gear they provide. For example I provide all gear within my dive packages, divers come back year after year because I save them money, and baggage space.

If this is not an option consider replacing your gear with low volume / light weight. Most manufacturers now produce light weight / low volume gear for the traveling diver.

I recently bought an awesome light weight dive travel bag made by TUSA that complies with size restrictions.

Ask your self...

Do really need booties and fins? Full foot fins, if you are tropical / boat diving are much lighter, and take up a lot less space.

Do you really need to take first and second stage of your reg? Ask if your in resort dive shop will be happy to take your second stage and gauge / computer and put it on their first stage. If you are tropical / shallow diving it really won't make that much difference to the regs function.

Can you pre-ship your gear? We have had divers that send their gear by freight a couple of weeks before they arrive, we clear it and then send it back at the end of the vacation. Hard core photogs usually want to dive with their own gear, and bring all their photography equipment with them on the plane.

In practical terms you will need at least 1 bag each, plus your carry on. I would also suggest that as the airlines look to cut costs (reduce our allowances / number of bags etc) they also try to reduce the costs involved in bag management. It is more likely now that one of your bags won't arrive at your destination at the same time as you... so split 50 / 50 - put some of your stuff in your wifes bag, and some of her stuff in yours. That way you won't be caught out should one of your cases be delayed.

Lastly, invest in a camera vest, you can pack important stuff in the pockets, and it'll go through the security machines just like a normal jacket... or if you really desperate wear your BCD on the plane, again it'll go through security screening just like a normal jacket... ;)

Think small(er)..I carry 2 sets of gear(3 mask, 2 snorkels, 2 BCs, 2 2 mm shorties, 2 pr skins, booties for 2, 2 pr fins plus ALL misc diving accessories) for my wife & myself in one large(62 inch I believe) hard Samsonite suitcase---total wt. = 49 lbs.....regulators, computers & camera stuff go in our carryon bag...We pack 1 other(soft) suitcase for all our clothes, her makeup etc etc---total wt.~ 45 to 48 lbs.....You gotta do what you gotta do.....
