Hi, been diving for a while, but don't know much about the equipment. Considering the purchase of a used regulator. It's called Oceanic Nitrox II regulator. Am I right in assuming that this regulator can be used for both air and nitrox? I only do air diving and have little interest in diving deep. From a regulator's point of view, does it matter which gas is going through it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Greg,

The short answer is if the gas that is going through the regulator is air then the regulator could care less. It seems that for the diving that you are doing the reg should be just fine for you. Only with nitrox and higher percentages of O2 do you have to worry about if the reg is compatible with them, they are all compatible with air. For the nitrox readiness you will probably want to have the reg serviced since in buying a used regulator you have no idea of it's internal condition or cleanliness.

Yes it does matter. Most modern regulators are designed to be used with air or NitrOx up to %40. They are NOT ready for pure oxygen.

For your diving, that used reg will work just fine. Be sure to have it serviced before you splash and then go have fun!
