Question on going for DM. I currently have most certs through Rescue with PADI, I also have Ice cert through NAUI. Considering DM with NAUI, curious how the progession with NAUI goes. Website appears to show that you must be Master Diver first with NAUI. Just a question for the NAUI professionals here.

Thanks, Don

The short answer is yes. NAUI instructor and course-directors has posted answers to the same question and they indicated that cross-over Dive Masters from other organizations are required to pass the NAUI Master Diver exam.

It should be noted that the NAUI Master Diver is much different than the PADI Master Diver designation. The NAUI Master Diver certification is actually a very thorough course and exam as opposed to an accumulation of specialties as is the case with PADI.

Before anybody starts flaming me this is NOT a PADI versus NAUI posting.

I have no patience for partisan bickering of my agency is better than your agency etc. Such bickering adds to value to the forum. Intelligent discourse on the other hand adds greatly to the value of the forum.

It should also be noted that the Dive Master designation in NAUI is at a different level in the professional hierarchy than the level of Dive Master within the PADI hierarchy.

NAUI hierarchy is as follows:

  • Assistant Instructor
  • Dive Master
  • Instructor

PADI hierarchy is as follows:

  • Dive Master
  • Assistant Instructor
  • Instructor

In the NAUI progression it was explained to me as follows:

The difference between Dive Master and Instructor is the classroom and presentation skills.

I am sure that others can supplement this information.

Sounds good so far. My instructor summarized DM as being the last chance that you get to really absorb the details and specifics of diving. By the time you hit ITC, you're expected to be able to answer pretty much any question about the sport, confidently. ITC ends up being, depending on the agency, about an 8 day X 12 hours a day romp of understanding teaching theory and classroom/presentation skills.
