The pictures in the manual should be pretty accurate, so maybe just read it again. Another option would be to dive according to the tables on your next dive (or bring your other computer), but also bring the gekko and look at it during the dive. The information you get during the dive is pretty self explanatory.

Then afterwards read the manual again to make sure you understood everything. For instance the parts about going into deco is nice to have read beforehand if you should ever experience it accidentaly.

Alberto, I'm curious; how much does the Gekko Online Class cost?

You can enroll in Gekko online class using either 500 Bubble Credits (equivalent to $4.95 ..... but you can earn Bubble Credits playing with the simulator) or the Activation Code.

Cost is published HERE

Alberto (aka eDiver)

Whoa, Alberto! 500 bubble credits or $4.95! String is right, that's outrageous! Why are you gouging these poor divers out of the hard-earned money they've set aside to tip their divemasters on vacation? :shakehead:

I myself intend to read the manual, save my bubble credits, and tip my divemaster with them when I go to the Red Sea. ;)

The same as he'd do if he'd read the manual - don't dive it. If it doesnt turn on its broken.

Cant happen. It auto activates regardless.

So he adds a bookmark that will display when he downloads the profile or displays the temperature. Not exactly a life threatening problem is it!

***

Not essential to every day use and a simulator wont help for that. Read the manual is more useful.

No the problem is people trying to sell courses and software for every tiny thing and getting people into the mindset that they need training for everything. We're talking about a foolproof recreational computer here that has a manual with it. It doesnt need extra training or a 3rd party simulator. Simply going diving is more than enough especially if you flick through the manual afterwards.

People need to start taking responsibility for themselves and not getting duped into spending money on extras like training when they aren't needed. We not trying to rebuild the Saturn V here. Let's get some perspective on this!

Wow. :shakehead: This is one of the most absurd and wrong-headed posts I've seen in ages. In fact, I think it deserves even more of these: :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead:

The very idea of jumping into the water with the piece of hi-tech equipment that is going to KEEP YOU ALIVE without even learning how to use it is so boneheaded I can't even believe that someone...a DIVER no less...would suggest it.

Yeah, let's do that...let's tell new divers to just go diving...just jump in, and don't bother learning how to use their dive computers. Don't even read the manual. Heck, why even bother getting certified! It's all just so SIMPLE, you'll know exactly what to do through OSMOSIS. Yeah, that's it...osmosis. Hey, makes sense -- they'll be the water, right? Isn't that where osmosis takes place?

It's almost not even worth responding to that post. It's just plain indefensible. :shakehead:

I started diving with a Gekko and I'm a pretty intelligent person and yet I hated the interface on it. It wasn't user friendly and I could just not figure it out, so back to the store it went and I bought the Tusa Element. Single button to move through menus, press and hold it to enter and make changes. Voila! Piece of cake!

I hope you find the answers you're looking for, I did, it just involved changing products.

I think I saw a post here recently by a guy who interpreted the down arrow that his computer displayed when he acquired a ceiling to mean "go down." Which he did, being, I guess, the kind of guy who follows instructions. Except for the instructions to read the manual.

Gee, an instruction manual that's hard to understand, never heard of that before.....

It is definitely NOT a good idea to just jump in and let the computer do its thing. But, it's not so important to be understanding the dive computer's workings and features as it is to understand your own dive profile and behavior, and how that relates to safe diving. I'm sure there are many things my computer does that I don't know how to make it do, and it's one of the simpler ones. But, on every dive, I do know more or less how deep I'm going, for how long, how close I am to NDLs, etc.....

If you don't understand what your computer is telling you, then it's pointless using one. You'll be far safer planning your dive with tables.

Even if you dive a conservative profile, stuff happens and if your computer tells you to do a stop, you need to know what it means. I recently read about an incident (maybe the same one as vladimir) were a diver didn't understand the stop warning and ended up extending deco time even further.

My advice would be to use the simulator while reading the manual. When you can see what the display is supposed to show, the manual makes for more sense.
