I bought a suunto gekko computer because I was told it was very simple to use. Maybe I am the simple one because reading the manual is a little confusing for both me and my wife. can anyone post a link to a video that will walk me through it's use. I learn much better by seeing and doing than by reading only.

Thanks

P.S.
I use a wisdom 2 and it is much easier to use and understand than the lizard(gekko).

It can save you a bunch on car insurance. Oh wait, nevermind...

Have you looked at Dive Navs site? I think they have tutorials on different computers.

Just dive and don't worry about the manual. Jump in, it turns on, it tells you depth, time, temperature and no stop time. On the way back up it counts 3-2-1 for safety stop between 3 and 6m. That's all there is to it.

It doesn't need a manual or as per usual someone trying to sell a non-needed simulator on here.

If you want a simulator Suunto provide a free one on their download manager software anyway.

:dontknow: Why would someone ever want to get educated on how to use their dive computer? Basically, the computer dives for you! :dontknow:

So, what is the original poster going to do when he jumps in and it doesn't turn on because it was in the wrong mode? Or if he's at depth and presses buttons he didn't intend to? How about the algorithm it uses, should he educate himself on that, to understand how conservative it is?

Your mindset regarding computers is one of the greatest issues facing divers today. They rely on their computer WAY too much without even understanding it.

The same as he'd do if he'd read the manual - don't dive it. If it doesnt turn on its broken.

because it was in the wrong mode?

Cant happen. It auto activates regardless.

Or if he's at depth and presses buttons he didn't intend to?

So he adds a bookmark that will display when he downloads the profile or displays the temperature. Not exactly a life threatening problem is it!

Not essential to every day use and a simulator wont help for that. Read the manual is more useful.

No the problem is people trying to sell courses and software for every tiny thing and getting people into the mindset that they need training for everything. We're talking about a foolproof recreational computer here that has a manual with it. It doesnt need extra training or a 3rd party simulator. Simply going diving is more than enough especially if you flick through the manual afterwards.

People need to start taking responsibility for themselves and not getting duped into spending money on extras like training when they aren't needed. We not trying to rebuild the Saturn V here. Let's get some perspective on this!

and if the OP is diving Nitrox?

I dive a Gekko and yes, it's a pretty straightforward computer but learning to use it properly takes a little bit of time and effort.

This advice rubbed me the wrong way as well. You should activate the computer first manually and let it go through the self checks, make sure the battery is good and O2 set correctly if set in nitrox mode, altitude setting is correct, personal setting is correct, and depth shows 0.

It's a bad habit to get into to just jump in without checking your gear to make sure everything is working correctly. Checking the computer before diving is part of the pre-dive checks you need to do, just as you check your regulator and air before you jump in. Jumping in the water and expecting everything to work properly is asking for trouble.

Suunto computers have a built in simulator that is useful for learning the display as you dive, without getting wet.

Alberto, I'm curious; how much does the Gekko Online Class cost?
