water in my country is cold and low vis.

i did my OW in warm, clear water in thailand.

if you don't mind, as someone said, taking some time (not too much) of your vacation time to get the classes, i think it's a nice way to do it.

i'm afraid i wouldn't get so hooked on diving if my first experience wasn't as good as it was. low vis and cold water wouldn't let me enjoy my dives as much as i did.
i got certified and now i have a lot of time to try the portuguese waters.

Take Open Water course first AT YOUR LDS. See if you like it or not. Open Water is the basics class. From there you can go on to AOW which is advanced diving skills, which I encourage ALL divers to do as well as Stress and Rescue class in order to be better prepared as a diver and a buddy. Once you know diving is for you, then I do encourage you to buy your own equipment which best suits your needs (recreational, technical, etc.) and allows you be be comfortable and more secure on each dive. I would also steer you away from resort courses - or be sure to take the real thing after you return to get all the basic training you need in order to be safe.
