I found a small slate with trident compass attached on amazon, and liked the idea but the slate is so small I knew I would use up the space in a minute. So, I cut the bottom few lines off some wet notes and made a nice, small pad that fits nicely in my pocket while providing a huge amount of writing space. As long as the compass doesn't suck I think this is a win! :D

Later in my training, I hope to learn to survey caves, and obviously this wouldn't be very good for that. Until then, for occasional use I think it will work.

That looks like a really great idea. I've got a slate kind of like that (different compass, but same idea). Even if the compass isn't great, you could take that one off and mount a better one. I may have to rig up something like that myself.

Thanks,

Steve

Handy. You might want to replace the golf pencil with a short solid graphite (artist's) stick....easier to sharpen when wet, and doesn't fall apart.

Also, Rite in the Rain makes a true underwater paper, DuraRite, as opposed to an all-weather paper. What you have there is not Wet Notes, which is a brand name...the DuraRite pads are more durable than the one you are using. Lots of good info at Which Brand of Waterproof Paper Will Work Best For You?, and https://www.divegearexpress.com/tools/slates.shtml, and http://www.riteintherain.com/inventoryD.asp?item_no=693&CatId={F0A1E2EF-F37D-478C-BB6C-11FF0CFED1E2}, for example.

I have found these pencils to be the best underwater. No need to sharpen just give them a twist. (MY compass is on my left wrist and my wetnotes are clipped off in my pocket. A hole drilled into the end cap with some thin bungee cord keeps the pencil attached to my wetnotes, which have a spot to store a couple of pencils. Along with tables, and my DAN card.)

What hardness do you find works best with slates and wetnotes?

6B, B is too hard and H is nearly invisible
