Hey guys, I am looking for some cheap stuff to start diving with and then upgrade as I go.

I already have fins, mask, booties, snorkel.

I just purchased a Oceanic Tour BCD for $80, very slightly used, that has the Air2 octo on it and is weight integrated Not sure if I'm going to end up using the air2 on it though. I'll have to try it out. I know that Air2 is a big debate around here.

On to the question: I'm looking to buy a 1st/2nd setup off of craigslist and this is what I've found as of late.

ScubaPro MKV/G250 Graphite with guage console including compass and pressure guage. It has an open spot for a puck computer. Asking $100. Was serviced about 18 months ago and hasn't been used since. Pictures show it to be in very good condition. Minor wear.

Sherwood Oasis 2 2nd stage, sherwood octo, Suunto pressure, depth, and compass console. Looks to be in very very good condition.Asking $100. I can't seem to find ANYTHING about the Oasis 2 setup though.

ScubraPro MK2 Plus/R190 with Suunto Pressure, Depth, Compass. Like new condition. Asking $130.

This is what I know:

ScubaPro MKV must be old as hell from what I've read. Not that that really matters, but I've read to some places tell you they can't get parts for it while others might be able to. I've read that the G250 is an awesome regulator and hard to beat for the money.

I know that the Sherwood Oasis seem to be good regs. I don't know if this passes on to the Oasis 2 since I can't find anything about it.

ScubaPro MK2 Plus/R190 is an entry level regulator but will surely get the job done. Especially since I only dive warm water.

So, any thoughts, advice, anything would be greatly appreciated. If you happen to want to sell me a decent reg setup for around this price, lemme know.

Cheers!

Can't say a lot about Scubapro regs, especially older ones, but I do know that the MkV is still completely serviceable still. DA Aquamaster is one of the resident SP gurus (there are several) and can answer any questions you may have about the older SP stuff, as well as arrange to have things serviced. Try PM'ing him if he doesn't chime in.

The Mk 5 is still supported in terms of annual service kits and there is basically nothing else that will go wrong with it. If it has the 5 port turret and 7/16" HP ports, it will do everything you'd ever want it to do and deliver excellent performance.

The G250 is superb and is worth $100 all by itself. It is also still fully supported by scubapro and the G250V is basically the same reg with some minor detail changes.

The Mk 2 190 is fine but it will not breathe anything like the Mk 5 G250.

If you don't want the MK5/G250, I'll take it. Not that I need another one....if you do buy it and you don't mind making a trip down to SA I'd be happy to take a look at it. There is someone closer to Austin who knows more than me, though. Maybe he'll check in on this thread.

Anyone know anything about the Sherwood Oasis 2?

The Oasis 2 is an earliy nineties version of the Oasis. It is the last model before they went to the oval 2nd stage and round first stage. It was a fine and rugged regulator which is typical of Sherwoods. That particular vintage of Sherwood firsts (if it is the original that came with that 2nd) was the only one that had externally adjustable intermediate pressure. It worked fine, but they went back to the shim adjusted IP when they went to the oval 2nd. Internal parts are currently available, and very inexpensive.

But, for warm water, I would take the MK 5, since, if properly adjusted, it will be a better breather than the Sherwood.

Get BOTH of the Scubapro's.
The MK5 G250 is missing the depth gauge and neither set has an alternate.
Put the best parts of both sets together and I bet you'd get a good $50 if you sell what's left over.
