I've been thinking about transitioning to Video with the same setup. Please post your post purchase opinion!

While diving I use a Dell Mini-9 and a external WD-Passport USB drive for storage. I don't expect to process in the field, but I dump what I have each night to the WD. SD memory cards are so cheap now that I have 6 and swap in a new one each night along with a charged battery. I go home with 2 copies: one on the SD card and one one on the WD.

The camcorders I have been looking at, the Canon HF-11 and HG-21 both have a SDHC slot where you can save video. I had considered what you say, using them to archive video until I get home... but the price isn't so cheap. Both recommend that you use the Class 4 or higher, I guess you need the higher speed for HD. So looking at the prices of those, i am probably not going to do that, just buying 1 or 2.

I will definitely post info here and some video tests once I get the setup! I think I will be happy with either model, if I can just decide! (at least I am down to 2 models, about a month ago I had a list of 6!)

I was surprised at the performance of different SD memory card vs price. Using a freeware program called 'Flash Memory Toolkit', I found that my cheap Kingstion 8GB cards were nearly as fast as a SanDisk III at half the price!

If the Dell Mini-9 had any hard drive space, which it doesn't being a 16GB SS drive, I'd be happy with bringing home two copies: one on the hard drive and one on the USB drive. As an alternate, I may just get a second external. It seems Best Buy has a deal every weekend on something around 300GB.

I'll be curious what you report on internal memory vs SD card performance, if you get the 11.

Keep us posted!

Well, I did it...... I ordered the HG-21. My final decision was made over a couple of points, mostly to do with the view finder. Since I will be using it topside, I can't see struggling with trying to see the LCD in sunlight like I would be doing with the HF-11. Also, the Ikelite housing for the HG-21 does not have any obstruction for the LCD for viewing where the housing for the HF-11 has some buttons which could interfere with viewing the LCD.
Ikelite Housing

I will probably go with the #6082 housing so that I have the additional "super eye viewfinder", but not ordering it yet as we don't have a dive trip scheduled yet.
