Can anyone who has been to Sipadan/Mabul tell me whether there is any mobile coverage on these islands and, if so, with which provider? I will be there in September and may need to make a couple of calls... :icorolley

Your best bet will be Celcom, followed by DIGI, MAXIS no no. You can't really get a good coverage in Mabul/Sipadan...maybe SMS.

Thanks for the info Alex. Out of curiousity, were you able to complete any calls using Celcom?

I am a little surprised that Celcom's coverage is better than Maxis on the islands. The coverage maps for both providers show that Maxis has a wider coverage area in and around Semporna.

haha....that's what Maxis "advertised" !!!
Well....you can if you are in Mabul, Sipadan....so so !!!
You are diving with Borneo Divers? or SMART? where you stay? Mabul or Sipadan?

I will be going with Borneo Divers. I will be splitting my stay - 2 nights on Sipadan and 2 nights on Mabul.

Was on Sipadan in April - no mobile coverage at all, can't say for Mabul but may be possible. On Sipadan there is however a payphone (at least one at PSR if nowhere else where you can buy calling cards from reception).

Which mobile network were you using?

Any, was auto-roaming from Singapore and in theory can pick up most if not all Malaysian operators - none had any reception. The phone is not preset to a specific Malaysian operator, tries to get the best signal but didn't get anything.
