Tell that to the doubles crowd :eyebrow:

Well, I dive doubles and i still don't think it's life support. Though, proper weighting is _very_ important (and I do dive in a drysuit :) )

Failures:

2 computers
1 wing (small leak, fixed with patch)
1 POS halcyon stainless steal inflator - actually failed twice, replaced with "plastic" inflator now.
2 lights (replaced)
1 fin strap (fixed under water)

I think that's it...

I havent really had any failures on my own gear, except a busted o-ring on a rented AL80, which of course was easilly fixed.
Issues ive witnessed myself;
* Minor hose leaks - The kinda minor leaks that you wont even notice on your bottomn time.
* Freeflow reg - We where preparing to do a dive and one of the guys on the boat connected his regulator and it just freeflowed and wouldnt stop. When opened looked like it was rather poorly maintaned. Sand inside the regs kinda give that away, dont it?
* Stuck BC inflator - This one coulda been BAD as it happened at the time we where about to ascend from a ~100 foot dive and the diver who had the problem didnt think of just disconnecting the hose so she went up FAST (over 300% of the recommended speed), I kinda decided that if someone was gonna be bent, better one than two and didnt follow. Fortunately shed gotten hold of the anchor line at ~15 feet. We actually did almost 10 minutes there just for good measure..
* Broken hose from the inflator to the BC with the result that no air went into the BC. - My buddy for that dive, just like me, dive dry so we still had a sweet night-dive (BC aint more than a convenience).

It kinda seems from the posts in this thread (as well as other posts Ive read) that the BC inflator system is a potential weakness of our gear?

Ive seen rental break with alarming regularity but i've got all my own kit so doesnt really bother me.

I've flooded a digital camera in 3ft of water in a pool.
Holed my drysuit on a wreck.

Other than that its been lost kit (lost 3 torches, 2 spare masks, 1 dsmb) as opposed to failiure.

The only failure i've personally experienced was an uncontrolled freeflow at 30m in a quarry.

As I service all of my own gear I've not really experienced anything other than minor problems such as an o ring going bad, piece of grit in inflator button after a student stomped me into the muck while trying to get somewhere fast, and a high pressure spool oring starting to leak after just being replaced a month before. I have seen alot of other peoples gear have some major issues and the majority of those were due to pure and simple neglect and/or stupidity. It's not hard to virtually eliminate most problems with regular maintenance. Alot of this stuff being mechanical it will at some time fail if not taken care of and even then it may still happen. But again having your own gear and maintaining it will go a very long way towards preventing even that.

Lots of little O ring stuff, or something that needs tightening - all fixable before the dive.

A few underwater failures - heck, if you dive doubles and stages and suit gas bottle, you've got maybe five or six regs, in a team of three that's 18 regs and bunches more O rings. Something is going to fail eventually. Not to mention all those instructor or buddy imposed training failures. In fact, we have some kind of self-inflicted failure almost every dive. :D

But the worst ones are the ones that cause you to miss the dive. I would consider a flooding drysuit as one of my worst failures.

As for my own gear:
punctured drysuit
split wide open drysuit zip:D
a few broken mask straps
one broken finstrap
that's about it.

As for rentalgear well that a whole different ballgame.
tear in reg membrane
leaking bc inflator
leaking bc dumpvalve
broken buckels and strapr on bc
tear in footpocket fullfoot fin
tear in maskskirt
flooded spg and depthgauge
leaking hoses on hp and lp
shall I go on:confused:

do yourself a favor...get your own,cost some $$$ but it's worth it

As for failures in the water the only one of consequence was a rented tank (Playa del Carmen). After inverting to take a picture at about 65 feet, I straightened up and took a breath...but only got about 20 percent air. The tank valve was plugged with corrosion and evidently the internal "snorkel" was missing. Long story, but all turned out well. I was using my own gear for everything but the tank, and I have little idea how to prevent another such failure. Any ideas from SB'ers would be great.

The only thing that has broken on me lately is a Halycon spring strap.

A BC is not really life support, get your BC and read the tag on the inside and see if it has a CG rating or such as that. I never saw a BC that has a rating. A BC is not even essential, it is a convenience really. N

Thanks, Nemrod I was going to comment on this that a BC is not life support.

I also forgot to mention 2 computers that where DOA returned for different make/models.
