I know the general risks, long term effects on bones and joints, etc. Do the risks still apply if you are in good shape and great health? Also, are the risks magnified if you are a woman? Just wondering!

Can't really answer your questions, but since you are new :) Welcome to ScubaBoard! I'm sure someone will be posting shortly with a more helpfull response.

Im going to sound really stupid here but I didnt know there were any long term effects on joints and bones. I have joint and bone probs as it is so will be interested to hear if any types of diving could aggravate that.

Of the bone issue the worst one is called necrosis of the bone. I don't want to sound like a know it all because I am not but you can google is up and it will tell you more than what I have read. There is also some pain commercial divers who do saturation get when they are compressed. One diver I knew from the north sea actually experienced it. Most of the guys I work with have some form of arthritis. I have rheumatoid arthritis, have been in the water since I was a kid and pretty much always in for the last ten years first a recreational diver then as a commercial diver.
As a woman the biggest issue I've faced (sorry guys) is UTI's. I NEVER had one until last year, now in the last six months I've had four. No major habits have changed (ha ha) except that I dive in pretty nasty water and work long hours when often a toilet is nowhere in sight. I've become friendly with a bucket but it still is no substitute. A lot of the guys get them too but honestly it's questionable why they get it (ha ha).
My husband (also a commercial diver) thinks I'm falling apart but in truth I'm pretty healthy I just give myself a pretty good beating with work. He too has common sores (long hours in a dry suit) and achy muscles.
Oh yeah I forgot... the most common for all divers...memory loss. I was saying???

There are additional risks over the general ones that apply to recreational diving. The risks always apply with anything you do underwater / pressure. Whether it's magnified if you are a woman is something I can't answer, but I don't see why it would be?

Commercial diving isn't exactly a cakewalk. Sometimes, you are diving in some really gross stuff... including commercial and human waste, zero visibility, and not to mention the claustrophobia of being in that full face dive helmet with a rediculous amount of weight strapped to you.

It pays decent, but I wouldn't consider as a "fun" job. Some of the commercial divers I know, hardly even go rec diving anymore.

Hope I haven't discouraged you. Most people just don't consider some of the things that I mentioned, then it's a rude awakening when they get into it.

Cheers and Good Luck! :thumbs-up

Wow, well isn't that fantastic. Yeah, nobody mentioned the human waste. I suppose I could expect that though...I really appreciate all the input. I think I'll explore my options. ;)

That isn't mud your looking at. The brown stuff is only a couple of stages off the dinner table.

Dive pay IS good. That little trip took around an hour, I get $.40 an hour for diving so it was worth 40 cents. :D

Canadian Diver only said it in a few words. I just thought a pic is worth a thousand words. hehehehe.

Very big difference. Commercial Divers are organized. :D

That reminds me of a story I once read on offshorediver.com

Follow this link and scroll exactly halfway down the page to the story called "Talk about taking **** as a tender.....!" The title is yellow on a black page, it shouldn't be too hard to spot.
