Shrove Tuesday 2014 is March 4, meaning that Carnaval Week will be Feb 26-March 5. Latter part of Carnaval has bands playing across the street from El Cantil until the wee hours.

Funny how things work out. We did a week over Newyrs 2008 or was it '09 and to escape the awful food at the Occidental resort where we were staying at we went to eat at Prima. There we met the owner and I remember being quite impressed at his passion and attention to detail, what really stuck out was his insistence on white bedlinens so you KNOW they will be cleaned. Small detail but I still remember it. Not to mention the food there was as good if not better as back home but minus the overpriced wine we are forced to pay for from our government owned liquor monopoly.

My bad - i thought it was always in feb. One of these years i gotta make it there for carnival;

With both my kids in college now, we've been forced to head down during the dreaded spring break for the last few years. Never had ANY issues in Cozumel as far as crowds/drunks/etc. We PAY more (spring break/high season rates)....but we book early enough that we get the hotel/OP we want. We've even stayed over on the mainland a couple of times with no issues. We don't do Cancun and if we go into Playa we only do it during the day. Coz just doesn't seem to draw the typical spring break crowds, and some hotels have spring break policies that discourage the party-hardy crowds (age restrictions, limits on number in room, etc). I would rather not go in March due to weather, but I don't have much more time with the kids so I'm perfectly happy :)

You will find that there are many VERY good places to eat here now. Prima will soon be closed for dinner - open only for breakfast and lunch.

That stinks about prima- I ate their for the first time last trip- actually went twice with two different groups. Had my first ribeye on the island and surprisingly it was great, but we were the only ones in their both nights, so I get why they are closing for dinner.

.

Prima used to be in such an excellent spot. Eating outdoors on the second floor, there used to be a line out the door. I wonder if they got too upscale for their own good?

That's a shame. The sunset view from there was the best thing about going to Prima for dinner. The food was just OK, IMO.
