Given that South Caicos Ocean Haven, the only dive resort on the island, closed several years ago how have you been diving South Caicos?

Also, there isn't any casino within walking distance of the Comfort Suites since the Allegro closed in April of this year. It was purchased by a wealthy ex-pat who wants to build his dream (I'd call it a nightmare), a massive resort complex with hotels, condos, retail stores. Even rumor of a waterpark. It's 3/4 destroyed by now. The old onsite dive op, Dive Provo, already has moved across the street to Ports of Call over where Fifi is located.

Best regards.

21 North and Barefoot Cafe are both pretty good also. There are both right at the Comfort Suites. We liked Calico Jacks the best of those though.

tim...i stayed at a place in Barbados that the electricity went out when you left the room. The key was on a little piece of metal that when you entered the room you slid it into a receptacle that made some kind of electric contact and turned on the electricity to the room. I just took the key off of it and left it in the receptacle so we had AC and a cool room to come back to after a hot day at the beach. Maybe the same set up there.

Does Caicos Adventures and/or Provo take
Divers out to the wall. I have read some earlier
threads stating that some dive operations out of
Provenc. will just take divers in Grace Bay.

Caicos Adventures doesn't do Grace Bay much, they leave from the south side of the island and head to the walls at places like West Caicos and other good spots. About the only thing they do in Grace Bay is night dives. Always doing the longer trips to the best sites is one of their claims to fame.

Dive Provo does a mixture, they have a boat based on the south side (docked right next to Caicos Adventures boat when I was there) that goes south to the walls, and other boats doing Grace Bay and such.

Caicos Adventures will not go into Grace Bay except after dark. Beaches will take you there quite often. Dive Provo and Provo Turtle Divers will occasionally go there.

Sorry for any outdated information. The last time I was in South Caicos was approx 18 monthes ago...Feb 2002. I founfd the diving to be wonderful and the facilites adequate at best. We had the whole place to ourselves. Do you know of any plans to reopen any diving facilites on S. Caicos as I would love to go back there. Drop me a line if you hear of anything. Thanks alot...again sorry for the outdated info

I'm a big fan of South Caicos diving myself, as evidenced by my feature trip report in the May '01 issue of Undercurrent (http://www.undercurrent.org)---->

http://www.undercurrent.org/UCnow/articles/SCaicos200105.shtml

Sadly, Bob & Diane closed South Caicos Ocean Haven due to the difficulties of doing business on South Caicos. The facilities were taken over the beginning of April of '02 by new operators, the folks who ran the bone fishing charters. They supposedly wanted to continue the dive operation and did continue to do so for a while.

Unfortunately the reports from divers I have referred to South Caicos indicated that the new operators were not living up to the established standards of customer service. Anyway, they closed down for that summer, without a reported re-opening date, and since then website was closed and no one has answered e-mails.

In any event, Salt Cay Divers http://www.saltcaydivers.tc/ over on neighboring Salt Cay now has two possibilities for South Caicos diving. The first is day trips—it’s about an hour or a little longer on a smooth day. There will be many days when it will not be doable on a boat the size of theirs. Other possibility is boating/flying people over and having them overnight(s) at the South Caicos Lodge (nee South Caicos Ocean Heaven).

The rub is that order to room or even feed a group on South Caicos they need at least 4 paying divers. Apparently, Salt Cay Divers has an instructor, boats & tanks lined up on South Caicos. To date I have heard from one group that has done an overnight situation and apparently it went well.

Best wishes.
