I am planning on a trip to Cozumel and am staying at the El Cozumelo.
I am new to diving and have a couple of questions.

As far as diving goes ...
1. If I go by myself, will there be the opportunity to pair up with someone when I sign up for a dive?
2. Do you wear your wetsuit or do you change on the boat?

I haven't been diving in Coz but I can answer generally. It's almost never a problem finding a buddy, but you need to make sure it's someone you will be comfortable diving with (do a search on 'instabuddy' and read about what to look for).

As far as the wetsuit goes, bring it with you on the boat. Ask how long it will take to get to the dive site. If it's short, suit up before you get under way. Otherwise, suit up when you near the site unless you want the suit on for warmth or sun protection.

When are you going and who are you diving with? If I understand correctly Ocean Tours (Scuba Du) is the on-site dive outfit at the El Cozemeleno.

I myself will be there next month.

In Cozumel, you normally stay with the DM, so I don't know if you get paired up with a buddy or if it's kind of just a group dive. I had a buddy (and an even number of people other than the DM) when I went, so we never had to worry about forming a pair or anything.

You could wear your wetsuit onto the boat, but you might cook. It's warm in Cozumel, so if you're not wet, it might be uncomfortable being in a wetsuit outside of the water. We always had more than enough time to get wetsuits on while cruising over to the first dive site.

Have a great time in Cozumel! It's a lot of fun diving there! :D

We have never had any need for getting buddied up in Cozumel. The wife and I dive but we also have brought along a 3rd without issue (daughter and mother-in-law). Mainly because the DM will be with you.. He will pair you up should something arise.

Wetsuits are not needed as the water is warm but if you must, I would keep it on the whole time.. maybe dive in the water off the dock then hang out and wait..

Most Cozumel dives are fairly close to the island so the boats rarely travel longer than 30min..

On our next trip, we plan on diving the dangerous (ohh ahh) side. Have to notify ahead of time and I think they need clearance from the Harbor Master. Should be good.

We tend to prefer advanced dives overall. Generally more going on.

Whether you need a wet suit in Cozumel is entirely up to your own reaction to the water temperatures. Everyone is different. Some people see no need for a wet suit, but I know two instructors who use a 7mm suit there. One of the dive masters I used this summer used a 5 mm suit.

As for me, I used to be pleased as punch with a 0.5 mm suit there until it got too baggy. I now use a 3mm suit. I always wear full suits in the ocean, because I never know when some little jellyfish or something similar is going to try to make my life miserable.

Wearing a wet suit out of the water in the tropics is a really good way to get heat exhaustion. Bring it with you and then pay attention as the boat heads toward the site. At some point, if there are people who are knowledgeable about the area on baord, you will see them start to suit up. That's a good clue for you. Otherwise, the DM will usually tell you when to start getting ready.

The dive operators in Cozumel are very helpful, almost to a fault. Let them know your experience level, and they will make sure you are OK. In addition, let the operator know your experience level when you sign up for the trip. If they have a number of boats, they will try to separate divers by ability. Many of the dive sites there are of the kind that a boat full of beginners and a boat load of experts can splash in at the same location and have totally different dives, with the DMs using their judgments to lead each group as is appropriate to their abilities.

Thanks everyone. I have just finished my dive training (along with a friend of mine) and am looking forward to spending as much time underwater as nature will allow.

We booked this trip a couple of days ago and will be at the resort from the 26th to the 31st of October. Has anyone ever stayed there before? How is Scuba Du? Anything we should watch out for?

Of the many times we went to Coz I never recall wearing a wet suit. You really don't have to wear your official Scuba Steve superhero uniform, a t shirt (rash guard) and swimsuit will do fine in warm water. N

No no need to worry about a buddy, if there are no singles you can buddy up with a DM with most of the dive ops.

I bring my wet suit on board and put it on while on the boat, depending on the dive op there is usually a little bit of a ride to the site.

Coz is great!

Regards

Dive skins or 3 mm suits go on quite easily, so I leave the suit in my mesh bag until dive time. But if you're on a small boat and you have a short ride you may want to consider putting your full suit on up to the waist, putting your booties on, and tying the sleeves around your waist ahead of time. Then just slip it over your shoulders at dive time. I always wear at least a full-body skin to protect against stings.
