Hi everyone,

I've been diving with a friend for over 3 years now and I’ve recently acquired my private pilot’s license. I was hoping threes a way to combine my two hobbies and maybe reach some dive sites that were just too far away before. However I’m not sure if this is possible with the no fly time after a dive. If the maximum altitude reached during the flight is 3000 feet would it be possible to just plan the dive as a high elevation dive? Not sure if anyone can help me with my specific question but if not who would you recommend I speak with to get an answer?

You might also want to post this question in the Marine Science & Physiology subforum, under Ask Dr. Decompression: http://www.scubaboard.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15.

Just fly below 500 feet VFR and not worry about it.

I used to fly for a living and once while doing scenic flights in Maine, before I was a diver, two guys starting telling me how they just finished a two tank shore dive as we are climbing away from the airport. I leveled off at a low altitude, probably 1000' but I dont recall exactly, and returned them to the airport. I always thought this was a little reckless on their part, but even after taking a OW class I am not sure how much danger they were in. Not knowing the details of their dive I probably never will.

Not that I can say it’s correct and approved, but for over 35 years I’ve regularly flown 6 hours after diving if I don’t exceed 2,000’ and the one time I got bent in my stupid youth was at 8,000’ dodging thunderstorms about 6 hours after a day with 2 dives below 100’. If I feel I may be pushing it I grab the O2 tank in the plane and use it during my preflight and into the flight so I typically have 30-45 minutes of O2 before the actual flight.

For the better part of 7 years I flew home every Monday morning about 4AM after a full day of diving Sunday as long as I knew I would not need to exceed 3,700’ (the MEA) for the trip. I’ve also had the adventure of making a couple trips from the Midwest to Grand Turk for dive trip vacations and island hoping in a C150 that was incredible (even being very slow).

I like that one guy's suggestion--just skydive! :)

My dad would say you should get your IFR cert, then go wherever you want. If you have the IFR cert you can fly in weather that puts VFR pilots in the FBO instead of a plane.

That said, my dad is a piivate pilot with IFR rating, he owns a single engine Piper Archer with five other guys and he has more safety equipment in that thing than in our boat. he has flown in it out to the Grand Canyon and to Niagara falls. He loves having an IFR cert :) And I think he's gonna get a scuba cert too!

This is the way to dive. http://www.seaplane-diving.com/
I have used helicopters to ferry me out to the ribbon reefs in Australia. Kind of an expensive way to sleep late, but it was fun to try, and it gave a Thunderball feel to the excursion.
