Back in the day (when my father first started diving) wearing a drysuit was enough. That is, you were not expected to wear a BCD with the dry suit. He has a "tank pack" that essentially is a bp+harness that held the tank only. The only way to control buoyancy was the drysuit.

Most of the time I have my BC and never use it except for added buoyancy at the surface rolling into the water off the boat or waiting to get back on it.

By the way, most in the 70's and first half of the 80's were not taught to dive a dry suit, we just did it. The same with doubles as there just were no classes.
