Has anyone heard of the incident involving a bar from the U.S. inserting coins and notes in plastic bags and depositing the bags on different reefs in Bonaire?

Apparently, the note in the bag says that the coin can be redeemed for a drink at the bar.

The bags have been removed. The offenders were identified, educated by STINAPA, and did some community service work to atone for their ignorant ways.

More info here on Susan Porter's public BSDME Facebook page.

Reminds me of when we found some party balloons, attached to some coral, with plastic zip-ties. How insensitive can divers be?

We used shears to remove the ties, and brought all the crap back onto the boat at the end of the dive.

Wow - I have no words for this behavior. Were the offenders actually divers or just morons dumping their self-serving crap on the reef? The article says divers but I can't believe anyone in the community would act or even allow another diver to act in that manner

What kind of morons would think that advertising for a bar in PIck City, North Dakota on Bonaire would be a good use of advertising dollars. They're probably the only divers that live in that sprawling metropolis of 123 people...:rofl3:

It was probably more of a stunt so that they could write off the trip on their taxes as an advertising expense.

While a step in the right direction, a 1/2 day of community service seems minor. I would add a 1 way ticket off island on the next flight (regardless of destination) and confiscation of gear. STINAPA could auction off their gear and use the proceeds to defray their expenses.
