Question regarding the drop off dives and shore dives from cocoview resort, how far of a walk is it with all of your dive gear on once you get out of the water till you get to the dive shop?
My back isn't too happy about walking around with a tank on my back, so was wondering if it is a hike, maybe I could hire a "caddy" to carry my gear to and from the water???

Mark

About 150-200 feet but if you like you can remove the tank at the waters edge and leave it in the tank rack there....personally, I just keep walking, IMO it is easier than taking the gear off and carrying it the rest of the way.

I've done it so many times, I counted it out. It is 90 paces on hard, flat sand. I shuffle a bit.

Thanks for the quick response Herman & Roatanman ! Nice Map.
Well that pretty much inks me in for CCV. Now I need to pick a week in October or November. Any recommendations for either month?

Mark

Both responses to your question are correct and I do not believe you will have any regrets going to CCV...! We like like late March early April but check the weather trends and use that for helping with your decision... Water temp may play a little part but not much... I know in late March a 3/2 shorty works for me but then again, that me...!

Best to you, lee

October and November are not stellar times for Roatan, but if you must- you'll be way better off at CCV on the South side. The storms come crashing down from the North.

Given the choice of Oct or Nov, I would plan it as late in Nov as possible. Remember, CCV is in hurricane territory so as late as possible will reduce the chance of spending the trip watching it rain.......I was had the "pleasure" of riding out hurricane Wilma at CCV a few years ago.

To give the photo a little better meaning and some scale, the white line in the water just to the left of "Cananas" is the exit. If you look up a little, the Dive Dock is where you drop off your gear. Now for some scale, just above the "D" in Dock is one of the dive boats which are around 50 ft long, now you have a scale reference.

I agree with Herman...if it HAS to be October or November, make it late November. Even if you don't consider hurricanes, October is one of the rainiest months on the island. Of course rain won't keep you from diving, but it does determine the quality of what you will see ;)

Thanks everyone for your reply's! I did check out the rainfall charts for that time of year and yeah it's a pretty wet time of year, but I'm just jones'n for a dive trip and wanted to wait out the hurricane season before I go.
Can't wait to book my reservations!

I was down there in May. You come out of the water next to the club room. You then walk to the other side of the island to the bay where your locker is. I think they have 4 or 5 bays. Each bay has a set of outdoor showers, rinsing tank and drying racks for your gear. When things are dry, you shift them to your locker. There is one bay for each boat. My bay was one of the closer ones. I think it was something like 70 strides from the water which is a bit over 200'. The walking was easy. You can also shed your tank at the water's edge and stow it on a little rack there. I did not bother. I am 59 and many people were older than I am. I don't recall anyone experiencing any difficulty. My wife has some back problems and the walk did not bother her at all. You should be fine.

If worse comes to worse, you could probably take your tank off at the platform and prevail on the good nature of your dive buddy to lug it into shore and put it one the rack.

Also, if you are at all good with air, they have the shorty tanks. A shorty tank should be enough for a drop off dive. My wife did most of her dives with shorties.
