Greetings,

I thought this forum might be the perfect place to share my Cocos Island trip report, which can be found at the link below. Additionally, Cocos has been nominated for one of the new7wonders of nature. I would encourage you to vote for it at the link below since if Cocos wins the increased awareness will help create awareness and will likely result in better protection for the sharks where illegal fishing/shark finning are still regular occurances.

Very nice . . .thanks for the report!

34 days now and counting. . .

12 November, however many days that is. About 140. Hmmm, that sees like an awful lot.

Thanks for the trip report - whetting my appetite even more. Thanks also for the mention of shark conservation. The reason I am going to Cocos this year and not in 5 years is that I head even there illegal fishing is taking its toll on the sharks so I'm coming to observe while the sharks are there to observe. I truly hope someone clever and influential soon comes up with a plan that will stop this decimation of sharks. Maybe someone needs to give the Chinese a big bag of money to educate their people on the downsides of shark fin soup.

So glad to hear you are going! I was shocked to see how many sharks had fishing hooks hanging out of their mouths, it was really sad. The largest group of hammerheads we saw was 80 the DMs said they used to see them in the 200-300 range, so I think you're smart to go now. I agree, something definitely needs to be done, positive change is happening very slowly. I hope you have an amazing trip.

Yeah, it makes me ashamed to be a human. At least I can bear witness to their beauty before we wipe them out.

Everyday waiting to get there is fun tho. It's like being a kid again, waiting for Christmas. I pray I get some bait ball action :)

Fairybassett - please do report back soon as you come home. Hope you have a WONDERFUL time. xxx
