hey all-
have tickets for the first week of june! (1st timer)
i'm having a little trouble communicating with coconut tree, though.has anybody stayed in the west end cabins? what size is the bed(s)? how about west bay? what is the difference?did you do the dive package? how did it work out? it seems as though i'm dealing with two seperate entities? how many times does the boat go out? (once in AM, once in afternoon - two dives each time???) so many questions... when i ask (by e-mail) i only get answers to some of them, and it kinda worries me!!!
any info would help-
we are looking at cocunut because we won't be doing the extreme 30 dive week some resorts offer... any other options???
thanks so much!

me and my dive buddy did the coconut tree dives and cabin package.

you will pay at the coconut tree store for your cabin when you arrive. and you pay for your dives at the shop at the end of the week.

We stayed in a room with two double beds. enough space to be comfortable. The A/C takes a while to cool of the room, but does get very COLD. The fridge works, the sheets and towels are clean. The hammock on the patio was nice. TV works. Maid cleans up everyday. cant complain. The place was rustic, but i wouldnt stay anywhere else. Its conveiniently located, and i happen to like the chickens.

It does seem like there is a big disconnect between the dive shop, the store, the person you email, and the person you talk to if you call. But at the end of the day, it all worked out for me, and there were no issues.

if you are advanced certified....i would recommend making hte AM trip - two tank trip, first usually being a deeper dive.

the boat comes back and leaves again right away - but this would be a good time for you to off gas, grab a bite to eat, or maybe nap. head out on the afternoon trip for your third dive (single tank). and jump on as many night dives as you can (we did four) you wont regret it!

well, now that i think about it, my experience was back in may. some things may have changed. I think coconut tree has another boat. but either way. just show up. they'll take care of you. and bring cash - its better. any other questions, IM me christinah615 (AIM)

Keep trying to e-mail. E-mail on the island sometimes goes into an abyss only to resurface weeks later. Weird.

For more info on Roatan, go to www.bayislandsdiver.com It is hosted by one of the instructors at Coconut Tree but it is a general information website.

One good thing about Roatan in June -- if you are from Sacramento, the heat will be no problem for you.

Roatan June heat is not bad(usually)---it's Aug/Sept that will get you.........

You tend to get a much better response from the dive shop than the cabins. The main difference being the fact that nearly everyone in the dive shop are beach bum gringos with at least a masters degree, whilst the hotel staff a hard working locals. There is a USA and a UK number on the diveshop website which actually rings a phone in the West End dive shop (when the internet and Skype are working!).

The email address coconuttreedivers@gmail.com should be responded to in 48hrs in most cases.

The Cabins there at coconut are pretty darn nice actually. The location is great, I thought it might be a little noisy, but the jungle there is FAR noisier. I would say definitely stay there if you like to roll out of bed and stumble 20 feet to the dive shop for some of the best coffee in town and a big beautifull smile on Gay's face while she is opening the shop.

The dive shop is wonderfull, plain and simple the instructors are friendly, and smart. The after-dive comradery is wonderfull as well.

Coconut makes three boat trips a day. 8:30am(AOW divers only) these are great dives, best locations. It's two good dives with an on boat break. Then the boat heads out around 12:00 and 1:45 for more causal afternoon and educational dives.

If you are lucky enough to get a dive with Loren she points out the tiniest most awesome little critters.

I've been diving with Coconut Tree Divers (CTD) since they became Coconut Tree Divers. I wouldn't even consider any other dive shop! CTD is extremely conscientious, very experienced, very professional, have excellent equipment that is well taken care of, and they are a whole lot of fun on shore!!

Among the differences between West-end and West-Bay are;

The bigger resorts are in West-Bay and it has a more pristine beach,
The night-life is in West-End,
West-End has a larger variety of places to eat, and
Less bugs in West-End, but we still have plenty of them (i.e. sand flies).

I would stay in West-End, but definitely suggest visiting the other. You can actually walk over there, take a taxi, or a water taxi.

The cabins run off a generator for the whole facility. I believe there are two 80 KW units. One is a back-up for the other. The power tends to go out quite regularly on the island. If A/C is important, you are covered. There is always power at the cabins.

That's a good point about the generator; lots of less expensive places to stay have no power for a few hours almost every day. With the package discount, diving with CT and staying at the cabins is a really good deal.

It's definitely noisy there, though. Traffic is right outside your door, and there seems to be a local ordinance that forbids trucks from using mufflers. No way is the jungle noisier, unless there's a hoard of monkeys with large PA systems right outside the window. The traffic dies right down at night, it's only during the day that it's loud.

Most important, coconut tree is a quality dive op with really good people. It's kind of the social center for the west end, so you'll usually make some new friends.
