Has anyone ever stayed at Coco Palm Garden in Bonaire? It's one of the cheapest accommodations I've found while looking around on the internet, and the rooms look nice on their web page.

I'm mainly interested in how clean, comfortable and safe the rooms are. I'm looking to stay and dive on the cheap, and am definitely not interested in anything fancy.

If anyone has other recommendations for budget accommodations on Bonaire, I'd be very interested in those as well.

Thanks!

Clean,reasonably comfortable.Safe.

Certainly not fancy but fun and welcoming. Place is run by nice people.Maybe 3 blocks from the water.

I would be happy to stay there again.

Has a European rather than an American feel to it.

I've never stayed there, but I know where it is, we drove past it when we stayed in Belnem. Seemed nice enough.

Another option might be Golden Reef Inn owned by dvrliz1 here. Their resort isn't on the water either and might in fact be slightly farther than Coco Palms. But they're walking distance to a strip mall with a small grocery store, ATM and Lover's Ice Cream. And they have free wireless Internet and a pool. Plus Wannadive has a satellite office there.

From Coco Palms you'll be driving into town to go to Cultimara (market) for food since you're trying to save money. Or any restaurant as there's no food in Belnem - except for one small place that's breakfast only. Belnem is on the "wrong" side of the lagoon/airport. I happen to like it that way as it's quieter at night.

For almost the same $$/night Liz includes AC that Coco Palms charges $10 extra for. Plus GRI was: Bonaire's Hotel and Tourism Association's Property of the Year. recently. And I believe their properties are newer. Also Liz can hook you up with everything you need while there, they work with Wannadive and have car rental options. If I was looking to go to Bonaire on a budget, I think I'd definitely consider them.

If you are renting a car, Lagoen Hill will be cheaper still than either of them. But you'll be driving everywhere as it's up in the "hills" and a 2 mile drive to town/the water.

None of these places are walking distance to Kralendijk though. For that you'd have to stay at the Divi. Or there's an affordable place in town, can't remember the name. But for diving, downtown isn't where you want to be, the only site there is Town Pier and it's only done at night. Plus there's more cruise ships in port daily than there was a couple years ago. I wouldn't want to be downtown when they are.

Coco Palms is clean, comfortable and your hosts Brigitte and Richard live on site. The rooms are spaced out giving privacy and a nice place to spend time between or after dives. There is also a small bar in a courtyard where they have a buffet one night a week. I have some friends coming this week who have stayed there for the last 5 years.

I'd back Steve's suggestion and look into a dive&drive deal w/ Liz at GRI. You'll need/want a small extended cab pickup truck no matter where you stay, so factor that into your plans. Tank access thru GRI (or most ops) is simple and easy. (GRI uses WannaDive, really nice folks to work with and you'll have at least 3 sites where you can exchange tanks.) We've stayed w/ GRI twice and yes--clean, comfortable, quiet and nicely priced.

Make sure wherever you end up you have decent kitchen space if you really want to save $$ (no problem to get this w/ GRI). Bonaire is not known for it's bargain eateries, you'll save plenty by doing meals in a lot (but you'll miss some great food if you don't eat out at all!). Lot's of good choices for reasonable rates, especially if you don't mind being off the water a little ways. // ww

I appreciate all of the responses. I didn't think I would get so many.

It sounds like Coco Palm Garden is a clean, safe place, and the price is definitely right. Based on the prices I see on the internet, even GRI would wind up being about $100 more a week than Coco Palm Garden.

Thank you to everyone who responded. I really appreciate the input!
