I am considering switching to a cochran computer...I like the layout of the display. Anyone have any experience with them? Or any other suggestions for a good multi gas computer?

I own a Cochran Commander computer with one nitrox mix. I am very happy with it. You always have the option of upgrading it. It is a solid and reliable computer. Take care.

I like my Commander, simple to use and plenty of information in an easy to read format.

Cochran Commander with two nitrox mix mounted on the SPG with a compass. Don't do this. Too large & bulky. I'm going to put the Commander & compass on my wrists.

As to the computer, I have not yet used it for Nx, just air. Only had it about 4 months. So far, so good.

Large display, plenty of info, alarms, tap the face to illuminate. I'll probably spring for the PC interface in the spring.

I bought the commander this spring and have about 30 dives on it so far. Some of the features I like about the commander are its easy to read display, the nitrox mix doesn't automatically reset, and it logs 100 dives which are accessible from the unit. Another feature is the user replacable battery. The unit has a short term memory so that you don't lose your current nitrogen information if you have to change the battery in the middle of a trip.

Before buying the commander, I did alot of online research. It seems as though the air intergrated Cochran computer had alot of problems with the transmitter not communicating with the display unit. This gave Cochran a bad rep. Hardly anyone recommeded their computers. Alot of people also referred to the Bikini Atol web site which doesn't allow Cochran computers. They overlook the fact that Bikini Atol doesn't let alot of other manufacturer computers be used there either. Another problem frequently refered to is the story of the guy who had over 9 hours of deco. Cochran's response is that the person mistook the NDL timer resetting at the completion of his deco obligation for his deco time remaining. Since my computer will often reset to 9:59 NDL during my saftey stop, I think that Cochran may be right.

Ironically, alot of people recommended the UWATEC computers and told me not to buy the cochran. Since buying my commander, UWATEC has had two recalls (one on an older model and one for teh new smart computers).

One other thing to consider is that the commander is more liberal than other computers, especially on multiple dives. I state this based on comparing my NDL's to different buddies NDL's. Since we are doing similar profiles I would expect the differrence to be a couple of minutes but often see 10 to 15 minute differences. Based on what I have seen, I have decided not to push the NDL, but to end the dive early.

Hope this helps your decision.

I bought a Cochran after doing alot of web searching. Liked the lay out, the huge memory capacity compared to the others, user replaceable batteries, no lock out, user adjustable conservatism, upgradeable, alarm clock, etc and the software is nice to have. You can view your dive profiles in a graph form, there is also a log book in this software as well.
