Interesting question. Neither the Suunto website or 2009 product catalog is very specific about the cable. The implication is yes. The Aqualung (U.S. Distributor) is even less help.

But look at Leisurepro. If you look at the listing for this, Suunto PC Download Kit (USB) for Cobra, Mosquito, Vyper & Vytec computers
and look under the "Ask the Pro" tab, they say it's compatible with Cobra 2, Cobra 3, Vyper 2.

Now LP isn't an authorized Suunto dealer, but I bet they sell more Suunto than most that are. Coupled with my expectation that it's the same interface, I'd say yes, but I won't guarantee it.

I have used the Serial cobra 2 cable with my Cobra 3 and all worked well. Suunto however claim that the 3 is supposed to only work with the USB version of the cable. I think it has more to do with the software, I can't get it to work with DM3.0 but it works with DM 2.7. no great loss as I'm not into trimix!!

I think the key thing is USB-to-serial chip used within the cable. The newer Suunto cables use a chip that talks to newer as well as older Suunto computers. It may be that some aftermarket cables also work.

See the bottom of this page, and notice when it does NOT list the Cobra3 among supported devices:
MacDive - Devices

As an example, I have the Custom Idea cable which talks to the Vyper just fine, but which doesn't work for the Cobra 3. I then got the new Suunto cable which talks to both the Vyper and the Cobra 3.

does anyone know if the serial version of the cable is still available anywhere or am i going to have to get the usb? i am fortunate enough to have a serial port on my PC.
