I'm from the UK and having difficulty finding out how I go about getting my CMAS 3* certification.

I am currently a PADI DM and HSE Part IV diver but need CMAS 3* for a job application.

Does anybody have any information on crossing over/getting the CMAS certification? I understand that SAA is the issuing authority in the UK but there is limited information on their website about this.

I'd appreciate any advice/information!

Thanks,
Mairi

Yeah I found that too but the job requirements are:

"HSE SCUBA (part IV) or equivalent.
CMAS 3*
Advanced European Scientific Diver or sport equivalent (BSAC adv, PADI divemaster)"

So I assumed they want CMAS 3* as well... maybe I should just phone them!

Thanks for the info though!

As I read the requirements, as a PADI DM you fullfil them. You should check that.
Otherwise, if you actually need CMAS 3* it is not unimportant to know in which country the job will be. With HSE SCUBA requirement I assume it's somewhere in UK, so you should get in contact with SAA. But if it's somewhere outside of UK it might become difficult, because the different national CMAS federations don't like each other. For example in France they don't accept 3* divers from most other national federations than the french (with a few exceptions) as dive guides. That's a violation of European law, as well as it's against CMAS regulations, but nobody seems to take care.:shakehead:

The job is with the British Antarctic Survey, so I imagine the UK standards would be ok!
There just doesn't seem to be much information kicking about, think my best bet would be to phone SAA for more info on crossing over. Thanks for your help!

Before I would call SAA, I would call the British Antarctic Survey and ask them if you really need CMAS 3*, or if just PADI DM is ok.

Super sensible idea, my brain is too frazzled from studying to think clearly about anything else at the moment... fancy writing my cover letter too?!

Here in the US SEI issues CMAS cards now and under our system 3* is equivalent to our Adv Plus diver and 50 logged dives. I believe that this is due to the theory that is contained in the AOW + course along with some things that you will not see in any PADI recreational course like decompression procedures and free diving skills. But as explorer08 noted the rating means different things in different countries. Our DM for example is equivalent to a CMAS 1* Instructor. It is all about course content in theory and skills as well as experience and to an extent some politics as well.

Here is the SAA equivalent chart http://www.saa.org.uk/Portals/0/Club Crossover Guide.pdf

They have PADI DM as 2 Star..

You cane join SAA or BSAC and do the Supervisor or Advanced course to get your 3*.

Regards

That is one more typical example for the CMAS federations. Every national federation does whatever it wants. And even among themselves they are discordant.:cussing:

PADI DM as well as CMAS 3* are certified as Dive Leader according DIN EN 14153-3 and ISO 24801-3 and they are equivalent in nearly every equivalency list you will find, i.e.
