I have a buddy of mine who just was talking with a guy that he worked with that had an old clay pit on his property that he says is about 100' deep and extremely clear. He did say that the water has a light greenish tint to it. So my question to you is do you think it would be OK to dive??? My buddy are talking about check it out and if nothing else it would be a place to go just to get wet if we do not want to drive real far. Just to practice skills and such. I am just not sure about the greenish water. So I throw the question out there to anyone who may have an idea of what would cause the water to be an off color but still be clear. Now I have not seen it first hand so who knows what clear is to this guy, and his 100' might be 50'. I am still planning on checking it out unless someone thinks that the water would be unsafe...

the greenish caste is most likely from the fire clay that was mined from the pit. I've seen many of these and never had the impression that the vis would be to good. Let us know. Take care many of these are very deep with vertical walls making for challenging entry exit conditions.

As soon as I can get to it to take a look I will let you know what my impressions are... I guess we will see... Thanks for the info...

Well I sort of dove one this weekend. We dove a pond that has a clay pit in it... We were miss guided as to where in the pond the pit was though. We look for it but could not find it. THe bottom of the pond was 45ft. but the pit is supposed to be 100ft deep. The pond was all mucked up because of all the rain yesterday. Vis was about 6 ft at the best part and probably more like 3 or 4 ft most of the time. The owner assured us that it is normally very clear so we will go back and check it out this summer when the water temp is a little higher. It was 44 degrees at the below the thermalcline which was at about 20 ft. Which was getting a little cold for me, espically given that we could not see anything. I look forward to giving it another shot later....
