OK, this is not my idea! But I’m succumbing to peer pressure and posting this for a (non-diver) friend.

Why has no diver ever dived around the world? You know how people set world records, like hot air ballooning around the world and stuff like that? Well, we’re talking about swimming the circumference of the Earth underwater on scuba.

I explained that, the circumference of the Earth is 24900 miles. Say you use a scooter that goes 4 mph . You dive on OC at about 10’. You manage about, say, 8 hours per day in the water (tanks are brought down to you from the accompanying boat). So you’d travel about 32 miles per day. You’re diving mostly near the equator, so water temp is nice and warm.

At 32 miles per day, it would take 778 days in the water. You couldn’t dive seven days a week. So assuming some days off, some SI’s at exotic locations as you travel, TV interviews on Good Morning America, meetings with sponsors and such, you could probably do this in three to four years.

Who’s up for this?? (Where’s SeaJay when you need him?)

Unless you SCUBA on dry land your circumference will be a bit longer. Call National Geographic and sign your buddy up for an OW class. I'll be anxiously waiting to read about it. ;-)

Drill a hole in the ice at the North Pole, drop in, swim, say, a 500 foot radius circle and call it done! :)

ok, come on guys, you're missing the obvious

you need a jet airplane flying at mach speed... you can be lowered off the coast of Africa (plenty of room for error before you hit Australia) and hang at, say,
twenty feet?

going at mach 1, you can probably be towed around the earth in what, two,
three hours?

Panama Canal... move up in circumference for a while to make up some miles... African/Mediterranean Canal (whatever it's called)...

Suez canal

also known as "war zone"

no thanks. all you need is someone to drop a handgranade
in the water near you... ouch

Will you dive DIR and therefor be a better diver and get this done in one month?
No, it's a solo dive. No one would want to share the glory.

I got it!
There's a Saudi prince that has a private jet with--no kidding--a HUGE jacuzzi. Put on your gear, emerse in the hot tub, fuel that puppy up and take off! Of course, you'll need a good supply of tanks, and make sure the pilot watches those turns and sudden climbs and dives. In theory, it should work. Now, who wants to pay for the FUEL?
: )
