Have you considered Skype? Skype official website – free download and free calls and internet calls
All you need is a laptop computer, a microphone & internet access.

I believe calls to the U.S. are only 2.1 Cents per minute !

We've been using Skype to call U.S. for a few years, now.

It's not a big deal to bring the Laptop... and it gives us additional flexibility... watching movies on the plane, downloading photos to our computer, e-mail access, Skype, etc.

The only thing I ran into with the international packages was with AT&T the international packages were only available in a 12 month contract. In other words, you can't just turn it off when you get home, as you can with other carriers like T-Mobile.

So I suck it up and pay the international rates and still end up ahead.
Oh gawd I'd never do that. I did change my Alltel to the North America plan last time it did come in very handy for escape hurricane Dean - lots of phone calls. On that plan it was just as easy to call Houston as to call the local airline numbers (which have limited hours and may not answer even then) so I dialed the 800 number for Continental and just used airtime.

I did have to break my phone away from the family pool for that month, but changed it back at the end of the month.

Great reminder. I need to get a better headset maybe? Had problems with Skype, but no one else does, so it must have been on my end.

Good reminder. I tried skype once, didn't work well, but everyone else likes it. Might have been my headphone. I'll check it out. :thumb:

Skype service/connection/etc. has dramatically improved over the past 2 years. You should definately give it a try.

Jeff.

FYI- We have the ATT "FamilyTalk Nation 1100 Rollover & Unlimited Night/Weekend & Unlimited Mobile-To-Mobile Minutes" 69.99 and the "EXPANDEDINTLROAM $0.00" (expanded international roam) is free with this package. We had no roaming charges but calls were .99/min. We just call home 1/day to check in. Worth the 2-3 bucks (min)

Just wondering if ATT packages are different by state?

I used Windows Sound Recording to test my 3 mics and ruled out one; the other 2 were fine. Just added Skype to my computer again, signed up on the $3/month plan to call US & Canada phones unlimited for free, dumped the $20/month option off of my ATT home phone that did allow unlimited US calling. :thumb: Also sent an email to some friends suggesting they embrace the 21st century and get a mic for their computers. AOL audio messaging can sucketh, but Yahoo and Windows also have good computer to computer services; I just have little experience as so many of my friends don't add to their computers. :shakehead: I also got ATT to knock $5/month off of my DSL service without downgrading just because I threatened to shop cable providers if they didn't. :D Hint: You have to talk to the Retention Dept.

Glad I wasn't paying $1/min when I was negotiating escapes in advance of the H.Dean arrival. :11: I did have that with Alltel before they came out with the North America plan but I left my phone off after it functioned as an alarm clock each morning. Last year I opted for the NA plan just in case, and bingo. :eyebrow: After 9 pm local I was calling Continental's US 800 number from the bonus minutes. :crafty: This year I may put them in my Free Circle of 10 (I get 11 now, but I need to negotiate that like I did my DSL - they could give me more.)

I'm sure that ATT does offer phones and services that many find more appealing, tho. I don't mean to argue any humongous wireless company is better than another as they're just shareholder owned selfish corps out to maximize market share and profits both. I notice that both companies ask for zipcode infomation before quoting but that may have more to do with phones that fit the local network still in development - but gawd we have come so far since I was a field rep who had to sell the plans and do minor repairs to analog phones both 10 years ago. Here are ATT's wireless plans: Cell Phone Plans and cellular service - | Wireless from AT&T, formerly Cingular Cingular was a sick joke here over those years but seems to have improved since the merger. Hehe, I also remember the big Supreme breakup of ATT and the Bells, and now my local Bell has grown back to takeover ATT. The world it keeps changing. Hell, who would have thot that Texas would ever become a Republican state back then.

I still doubt that I'd change plans if I couldn't do it for a month then change back tho. ATT won't allow one month changes?

Just got back from Coz and my friend brought his Cingular (AT&T) phone after having explaining to them he was travelling to Mexico and it never worked. Then again my friend is a bit slow with technology.
The end story he picked up a local cell phone with pre-paid minutes. According to him it was reasonable.

Our Cingular/AT&T phones have always worked in Coz but we usually do add the Mexico plan before we leave.

However, we went to Cabo San Lucas in January and our phones did not work except for incoming calls, big dissapointment and expense; we had to use a land line to call out one time and it cost $26 US for 2 minutes. Cabo was a huge dissapointment, we will stick to Coz for our Mexican vacation fix.
