During my last dive everything was dandy, until I encountered a stubborn choking episode. It kind of freaked me out because normally I on dry land, I would just clear my throat really hard and it would be gone. I tried that a few times but it was still hard to breathe, I never had encountered this underwater so it was a bit unnerving. I decided to hold on to my reg and try to cough out really hard and it seemed to get a little better. But something was still making it uncomfortable to breathe normally. As I motioned to my dive buddy that I had something in my throat and I was just about to give the end dive signal, I decided to swallow a little bit of sea water and what ever was stuck making this reaction went down the tubes. I was thinking of trying this only once and if this didn't work I was just going to call it.

I am not sure if this was correct but it is what happened, I'm sure others have had this happen to them at some point.

Have your ever had an irritating throat episode. What did you do?

This is one of the most basic and important lessons you should have learned in your class. You need to swallow. They don't teach that anymore?

Yeah, I guess I didn't mention the fact that it was 3/4 into the dive and my throat and mouth was really dry. I think it was even more dry because I normally have a fair amount of water right before I head out to the water. I did not do so on this occasion. I actually was sipping on coffee as I was getting ready to warm me up. I think this might have made it worse and helped to set up this choking spit condition ( medical term of course).

So in other words my throat was as dry as the desert and I could not swallow that's why I had to take a tiny sip of sea water and swallow it down hard.
That's what I did, and it was my last attempted before calling this dive.

That's why I like to put a small water bottle in my BC pocket.. Just a small plastic bottle with a pop top... ;)

Jim....

This sounds like a good idea, especially after going through that episode!

Thanks
