I was just wondering if any of you have participated in Cabrillo's Choloate Lobster Dive or Catalina's Gold Star Dive. Im considering going to upcomming Gold Star Dive on July 10th.

I did the Chocolate lobster dive last year, it is a blast! Good friends, good prizes, and chocolate! Can't ask for much more than that.

I haven't done the Gold Star.

This thread caught my attention. What else could anyone ask for?
Chocolate and lobster.
Wish I could come!

yes i have participated in the dive. In fact the crowd I run around in has been responsible for salting the dive. That is lingo for tossing/planting the lobster tails. A couple of other Scuba shops/ clubs are responsible for providing surface support via kayaks. This is a huge volunteer day as it takes a lot of un-paid heroes to pull it off. And of course the $$ goes for a great cause which is the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

We were there last weekend and the diving sucked. The viz was about 3.5 feet. However, mid water is was closer to 5. Too bad that most diving is done near the bottom. You can expect very poor viz to somewhat ok viz. Last year was so-so I think sometwhere in the 6 to 7 foot range. The year before or before that we had close to 10 feet and found numerous sand dollar beds.

It is a very shallow dive. To find 20 feet we swam about 250 yards. We plant the lobsters anywhere from just beyond the surf zone to an imaginary line perpindicular to the break wall. Nothing will be deeper than 20 feet and most are found in the 8 to 15 foot range. Hint Hint.

The lobster tails are hermatetically sealed and off on a corner is a lead weight (seperated from the chocolate) along with a tag. The tags and numbers are randomised for the prizes. There is a limit as to the number of participants
There is a limit as to the number of tails you can take.
There is NO DFG there to watch your actions so... you didn't hear it from me.. but I have heard of folks dry sacking. One person i saw had about 5 tails. As he was goin in he "helped" a couple of divers that were not having much luck.

Safety - they take your C-card before you go in. As soon as you wexit the water you go to the prize officials to get your tags/lead weight removed and collect your C-card. Makes iteasier for us to make sure no-one is left behind. There is local rescue with an ambulance on site. There are divers on the surface that will drop down when you have wandered out of the area - PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THEM. You will need a compass. Oh yeah remember that the tide will change the depth. The first year we planted at high tide and bout 4 hours later when the divers went in the tide went out by about 3 feet. Man were we chasing folks let and right. yeah we planted them no deeper than 20 but they were really no deeper than 17! :11:

Food/vendors - a bunch of them. Coffee/snacks before the dive - donated and then sold to divers for support of the cause. I believe you get lunch and parking with your registration. Usually it is over by 2pm. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

Wow these events sound fun!

I must admit, I got so much more information then I had anticipated. Thanks you all for your feedback. This board is great.

I think I will participate in both of them.

I haven't participated in either, but I've heard of the chocolate lobster dive and just wasn't able to make it last year. Never heard of the gold star - what's that? I'm assuming the same type of thing - hunting for gold stars? who organizes it?

saf_25:

The goldstar dive is similar to the Lobster dive look at jengineer's description of the event. She did a great job describing the event.

Did the Chocolate Lobster dive Last year and had a lot of fun. My buddy and I were looking at doing the Gold star dive this year but it look like we are not going to be able to make it. We will be doing the Chocolate Lobster this year agian.
