It sounds like this might be a case of immersion–induced pulmonary edema. :huh:

It has relatives in exercise-induced and high-altitude pulmonary edema.

The concern I have is that you could have a pulmonary embolism. Either one from a blood clot thrown from your legs or air embolism secondary to diving. (which sounds unlikely from your profile)
The other concern I have from your history is that you could have undiagnosed, mild, intermittent asthma.
Most likely this is not reflux because it hurts to take a deep breath. That was my first thought while reading this until you included the pain with deep breaths. The other obvious culprits would be a spontaneous pneumothorax and barotrauma.

Either way, glad everything is turning out ok. You might still want to get tested for asthma.
