Yes, the resolution of the original clip is severely limited.
This is one good reason why making it worse is so awful!
The original Quicktime movie stream can't be read by Moviemaker (thanks M$!) So you have to have Quicktime convert it to AVI, which costs you some quality. Then MM converts it again, and the quality goes down even further.
With all three side-by-side on my screen, the difference is VERY noticable when playing them all at once.
